The layout is fine, with properly sized and spaced keys, shorter and slightly spaced-out arrows keys, and the extra set of multimedia keys at the top left, characteristic of ROG laptops. In fact, a 4080 configuration would have been very interesting for this 2023 ROG Flow X16 series as well, as the performance differences between the 4080 and the 4070 are significant, and some buyers would have paid extra for that. Asus offer this laptop in a multitude of options, and I expect many of you to want to compare the 4070 and 4060 specs on this sort of chassis. For comparison, I’ve added results from our review of the Zephyrus G16 down below, which is nearly identical in implementation and power settings to the X16. I haven’t yet tested any 4050 model, but will update the table once we do. Our review model is a higher-specced configuration of the ASUS ROG Flow X16, code name GV601RM, built on an AMD Ryzen 9 6900HS processor, 32 GB of DDR5-4800 memory in dual channel, 1 TB of fast SSD storage, and dual graphics: the Nvidia RTX 3060 dGPU with 6 GB of vRAM and the Radeon 680M iGPU integrated within the AMD processor. This 2023 generation is mostly a hardware update of the previous model, with whom it otherwise shares design characteristics and overall functionality. It steers away from the AMD platform implemented in the 2022 variants, though, and is now an Intel 13th-gen platform with RTX 4000 graphics. That allows for a notable boost in CPU performance, and almost no impact on the efficiency on battery power, Just keep in mind that most 2023 X16 configurations bundle a mini LED display, which looks awesome, but is more power-hungry than the standard IPS panels offered with most other premium laptops over the last years. I am a fan of this particular laptop (2022 Asus X16 RTX 3060) and even bought two for my family. While Armoury Crate has been fine for me, some strongly dislike it. Fortunately, there is an alternative in a third-party app named G-Helper which is a lightweight replacement. It's made by an individual developer – and being an IT professional myself – I can say he has done an amazing job with G-Helper. Add in a beautiful mini LED touch display option, good IO and inputs, and some punchy speakers, and this Flow X16 is going to be a popular alternative to the clamshell performance ultraportables available in the space at this point, such as the ROG Zephyrus M16, Razer Blade 15 or Blade 16, or the Lenovo Legion Slim 7. That’s expensive compared to the Zephyrus G15 and M16, which are both several hundreds of USD/EUR less for similar specs. Take these with a grain of salt, though, as prices might go down once the Flow X16 actually becomes available in stores. For reference, something like a ROG Zephyrus M16 is going to perform up to 20% faster in the CPU loads, with rather similar GPU results. I haven’t reviewed the RTX 3060 version of the M16, though, for a proper comparison.For storage, there are two M.2 2280 SSD slots inside, and our unit came with a mid-tier Micron 2400 drive. This is not as fast as the Samsung PM91A drives offered with other ROG models.

On Turbo, the design allows up to 140W of combined CPU+GPU power in games and demanding loads. The GPU takes up to 125W with Dynamic Boost, and the reminding 15W go to the CPU. Looks like the Flow X16 is going to demand a premium over the existing clamshell ROG Zephyrus designs of this generation, and that’s getting you the convertible form-factor with a touch-enabled mini LED display, paired with a sturdily made chassis, uncompromised inputs and ports, and the excellent balance of performance, cooling and noise levels for a thin-and-light performance ultraportable. The Core i9 processor stabilizes at ~90W of sustained power on the Turbo setting, with temperatures of around 94-96 C and scores of around 2850 points. The fans spin at ~45 dB at head level in this mode. All these combined allow the Flow X16 to properly cool the components in this chassis with lower fan noise levels than on other designs. Turbo spins the fans at 45 dBA on the Flow, but closer and over 50 dBA on the ROG Zephyrus models of the 2023 generation. The first panel is identical to the one offered with the 2022 Zephyrus M16, while the second option is also available in the 2022 Zephyrus DUO 16. For the Flow X16, though, we’re looking at glossy implementations with a touch layer, digitizer, and protective Gorilla Glass on top, while the Zephyrus models are all anti-glare and non-touch.

Here’s our detailed review of this 2023 Asus ROG Flow X13 update. ROG engineers had to bend a few conventions to accommodate all of the power inside it’s the Flow X16’s svelte frame. The X16 builds upon years of Intelligent Cooling experience and improvements to push the boundaries of the kind of power possible in a thin and light laptop. Our new Frost Force Technology directs air through precisely calculated and machined cutouts in the chassis, sending air directly towards internal components to keep them cool even during extended gaming sessions and video renders. In addition, the X16 has a unique tri-fan design. This extra auxiliary fan directly helps exhaust heat from the GPU to the heatsinks, while also keeping fan noise lower than a traditional dual fan design. The keyboard on the Flow X16 is a standard Asus implementation, similar to the one offered on the Zephyrus G15 and Zephyrus G16 lineups over the last few years. The 0dB Technology allows the fans to completely switch off with light use on the Silent profile, as long as the hardware stays under 50 C, which is most of the time. And that’s both on battery or when plugged in.Aside from these main power profiles, there are also some GPU options to choose from: Ultimate (dGPU only, requires a restart when selected), Standard (enables Advanced Optimus), Optimized (enables regular Optimus), and Eco (regular Optimus, but disables the dGPU). I mostly kept the laptop on Standard for daily use and tests, and opted for Ultimate for gaming. That’s the QHD+ 240Hz 3ms panel discussed in this review of the Zephyrus G16, and is still an excellent display, just without zone-dimming and not as bright in HDR as the miniLED one. That screen is more affordable, though, and notably more efficient when using the laptop on battery power.
