Description

Cherry trees generally start bearing fruit in their fourth year;dwarf trees bear fruit a year earlier. One mature, standard-size tart or sweet cherry tree will produce 30 to 50 quarts of cherries each year; a dwarf tree, about 10 to 15quarts. So we’ve established that cherry wine does exist as a drink. We understand your sentiments towards cherry wines, because it wasn’t until very recently, in 2006, that these wine varieties were allowed to ship from their state of origin across the globe. But cherry wines have actually been in existence since the Great Depression. The best of the best cherry wines, however, are made not solely from tart cherries (which is possible, by the way) but from the matrimony of both the sweet and tart cherry varieties. The resulting mixture is a well-balanced wine with just the right amount of acidity and a pleasant flavor profile to boot.

Critter numbers, given the abundance of hiding places for them in the forest, began to explode. That little cat died at the age of 18 and a half. And, during the last two years of her life, we didn't manage to harvest even one whole fruit. All the fruits were bitten and eaten, in whole or part, by one animal or another. As to the veggies, well, the rabbits made off with all the lettuce, celery and other greens. They didn't bother with tomatoes, peppers, or beans, so we managed harvest those even without the help of our cat. But, nothing else. Barolo: Often defined as one of Italy’s greatest wines, Barolo has made a name for itself among the wine-drinking community. It is classified as a Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) wine and is often referred to as the king of wines. It’s a classic, dry wine made from the Nebbiolo grape. When you take a sip of Barolo, you immediately notice distinct flavors of cherry and chocolate, with flowery nuances. Some say that, when aged, it also has aromas of tar and truffles. That’s for you to decide. Sour (tart) cherries, on the other hand, are more acidic and, as such, more tolerant of the humid continental climates of Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Their high acidity makes them perfect for winemaking. Most of the time frozen cherries are pre-prepared so this makes them great for making cherry wine. Brunello di Montalcini: A red wine from the Sangioevese grape, admired for its strong tannins and acidity. The taste of Brunello is very reminiscent of late summer harvests. Apart from cherries, this wine is very floral and gives tasting notes of other red fruits as well as leather, licorice and hazelnut. Young and aged Brunello di Montalcino are often distinguished. While you’ll find more cherry notes in the young wine, the aged has a taste of dried cherries and is much softer on the palate. This is the perfect choice if you’re looking for something more full bodied, with a discreet, subtle taste. If you are using the syrup from the tinned cherries you will want to decrease the amount of sugar you add. The can will usually detail how much sugar is in the syrup on the nutritional information or you can use a hydrometer to work it out. Sweet or Sour Cherry Wine Make a "dry" wine. A dry wine is simply a wine that has no residual sugar, meaning it isn’t sweet. [6] X Research source To make a dry wine, let your mixture ferment completely, allowing the yeast to consume all of the sugar. Here are some things to consider when making "dry" wine:It’s true – cherry wine is a thing. And no, we’re not talking about Lakewood cherry juice. We are talking real wines made from real cherries. Some might call it blasphemous to say that cherry wine is wine. But we want to debunk this myth. Wines are made from all sorts of fermented fruits, and not only grapes. A wine with 0.2% residual sugar contains two grams of sugar in a liter of wine. Dry wines are typically in the 0.2%-0.3% range, off-dry wines in the 1.0%-5.0% range, and sweet dessert wines are normally 5.0%-10%. For container-grown trees, first remove the rootball and set the tree on its side;cut through any pot-bound or encircled roots with shears. Don’t cover the top of theroot-ball. My advice is to adopt a few cats. The number will depend on the size of your property. We had 2 acres, and one cat was enough until she grew old and started eating only cat food... That's because the cat would catch critters that eat fruit and veggies), ranging from squirrels, possums, birds, et. al., shortly after they were born in the springtime. The size of the mother critter didn't really matter because she didn't go after the adult critters. She cleaned out their young. There is always a period of time when baby critters are left alone, while their mother goes out to get them food. That is when the little killing machines, otherwise known as cats, strike!

This is my personal preference I have most often used sour cherries for this recipe but if you use sweet cherries you will, of course, end up with a slightly sweeter wine. It is also worth trying a mix of both sweet and sour cherries so you can balance the sweetness yourself, you may have to experiment a little to get the perfect mix but it is definitely worth it.
