I love the way her stories are populated by characters who don't quite seem to neatly fit into the mainstream . Each of its poems, from the tenderest honeymoon address to the bold, inventive voices of its heroines, zings with vivacity and defiance. One of the themes of Flamingo, is kindness and while there are acts of kindness, I found more acts of endearing quirkiness and some not as endearing. Elliot’s characters are all complex, slightly damaged people, all doing the best they can, taking chances, wrapping themselves up in work, looking back with anger, nursing long held loves, they feel real and believable. This book follows Daniel and his mum, Eve, move next door to Sherry and Lesley, along with their daughters, and Eve and Daniel start to see them as the family they never really had.

I love that the characters are flawed, as we often are in life, which made them seem so tangible and real. Plus, the plot was so much more intricate than I expected, addressing various important themes in a sensitive and honest way. I thought it would be a contemporary novel (which maybe it is) but the writing is unique and captures the characters internal monologues beautifully with some really interesting observations about humanity along the way. Daniel Berry, der Protagonist in Rachel Elliotts neustem Buch "Flamingo", wird von seiner Freundin Erica verlassen. Then one of the key characters, who actions set off the entire chain of events that we read about, isn’t given a voice which left me with more questions than answers.Following Daniel and Eve, Mother and Son who move next door to Leslie and Sherry and their Daughters Pauline And Rae Flamingo is a story of how two families become interwoven, how they become so close they be default become family.

There are elements of how challenging it is running a business with a bits of Fawlty towers humour thrown in. Soon the story goes back in time, to 1984 where Daniel and his mother Eve are next-door neighbours to Sherry, Leslie and their children Rae and Pauline. Den ersten Stern hat das Buch auf den ersten Seiten verloren, denn ich habe tatsächlich überlegt, es sofort wieder zur Seite zu legen.Elliot’s prose is graceful and engaging, I enjoyed her writing, the book flows comfortably with believable characters and a real sense of place. Set in 2018 and the 80s, it's a song for the broken-hearted and the big-hearted, and is, ultimately, a novel grown from gratitude, and a book full of wild hope. Aber dann erfährt man immer mehr über ihn und über seine Vergangenheit und plötzlich macht es irgendwie Sinn, dass die menschliche Psyche solche Dinge geschehen lässt.

The ever-shifting identities in Flamingo make for a poetry that accepts change as a constant, addressing the darkest of subject matter with great compassion and even hope.

I just sunk into it and found myself completely absorbed in the characters' development - which was no surprise, as the two main families in this are brilliant. This volume, just like the others in the series, has a well-written text and fantastic, somewhat unexpected illustrations which illuminate the place of this animal in our world a book that also considers it important to deal with the role of a bird as a controversial plastic garden ornament testifies to the intellectual breadth of these volumes .

In 1984 a rather itinerant family the 22 year old Eve and her 6 year old son Daniel (who have been moving at random around the country after fleeing their Derbyshire home when Eve was born), rent the house next door to a “rambunctious” family of four: the mid 30s Sherry, her 15 year old and more serious husband Leslie, their introverted 9 year old daughter Rae and her more conventional 6 year old sister Pauline. Flamingo is an engrossing story of families, of the danger of opening your heart too wide, of hope and simple human kindness. Maybe the ending is intended as a happy one, but I was left wondering if history was about to repeat itself. What a like about the book is that it not only tells the adventures of a running a hotel, but also deals with different themes. Combining a deep subject knowledge and artistic eye, he [Contreras Koob] has produced a superb collection of images that play with colour, light, form and movement. Also included are suggestions for activities and ideas to talk through together to help children understand their emotions.
