Description

I read this book to get some insight into the differences between neurotypical people and people with autism. Pete, 39, describes Untypical as a ‘beginner’s guide to what it is to be autistic in the modern world, written with both neurotypical and neurodivergent readers in mind’.

And this is not a neat book about how the world isn't built for autistic people and what we should do about it. Pete’s witty and engaging narrative throughout is both insightful and passionate as he implores non-autistic readers to attempt to understand the experiences of autistic people in social, educational and employment environments, and how we as a society can make the world a less harmful place for neurodivergent communities. there was nothing I didn't already know in this book, so it wasn't particularly ground-breaking to me as a reader, but that's a very high standard to achieve!

Great start in general to understand the everyday challenges for adults (and especially men) with (undiagnosed) autism, and how to help us navigate the neurotypical world.

I enjoyed it as memoir and as assorted reflections and observations on the experience of neurodivergence and how it can be made more or less unnecessarily challenging. It describes the physical, sometimes verbal actions that many, if not most, autistic people will utilise to help regulate their mood, rather like a safety valve that allows a release of pressure. There's lots of useful insight and reflection - I was especially struck by his comments about unsurprising issues with public transport and that because of restricted earnings autistic people may be more likely to need to use public transport. AROUND 700,000 people in the UK have autism – but only 29 per cent of autistic adults are in employment.
