Description
Here is a selection of books aimed at ages 0-4, that will inspire babies and toddlers to care about their environment. This is a tale of dinosaurs using their strength and power to break up concrete roads and clear up piles of old cars and other man made rubbish. Tidy tackles the theme of caring for the environment from the unusual viewpoint of being overzealous and taking tidying too far.
It was such a pleasure to meet you both, and I really appreciated how smoothly and professionally you ran everything. We see the result in a shocking double page spread: a mountain of black bin bags dwarves the starkly naked trees. Pete hoovering up the catalogue reference on the final page of Tidy suggests that he hasn’t reformed entirely and is always going to be tempted to interfere with things that should be left alone. We are experiencing delays with deliveries to many countries, but in most cases local services have now resumed. As well as providing plenty of giggles, it also carries a valuable message about the importance of caring appropriately for the environment.
It has no words and uses beautifully created collage to show the progress of a scene from a window showing creeping urbanisation, over a period of possibly twenty years. Yesterday a parent came over to tell me how impressed she was by the book fair and that you did a fabulous job of selling the books to the children first. Daily Mail This beautiful book, illustrated in warm tones, is full of expressive, characterful animals and tells a charming story. He snips off flowers that don't match, washes the birds, vacuums the forest floor and sweeps, scrubs and polishes until everything is spick and span. However, the wicked looking stainless steel secateurs with which he is cutting off flowers whose colours ‘didn’t quite match’, should warn us that this is an animal whose scouring and scrubbing may lead to a drastic minimalist solution to nature’s inherent untidiness. With warm, rich illustrations, bursting with humorous detail and amusing rhyming text, the tale skips along and is great to read aloud. Bronnie is so lovely with the boys and we also felt that having a man enthusing about the books set a great example. Pete the badger likes everything to be neat and tidy at all times, but what starts as the collecting of one fallen leaf escalates and ends with the complete destruction of the forest! Your selection was perfect for our children and what really made the difference was your ability to engage with each child, discuss their interests and help them to choose a suitable book based on your extensive knowledge of the books you were selling.
Emily Gravett's place in the world of children's books is already established but in Tidy she excels herself and will delight new audiences. A rhyming text and witty illustrations introduce us to badger, Pete, whose penchant for keeping the forest and his various animal friends spick and span appears, to begin with, largely laudable. The Window is a stunning example of collage work which may inspire creativity in illustrations of children. Thereafter, as Pete’s Tidy begins with just one leaf, we see how this tiny step affects something else.
It might be interesting to compare different badger characters and look at some non-fiction about the wild animals to see if there is a realistic basis for representing badgers with these characteristics. Yourself and Bob are much cherished in our booky world and I personally really appreciate everything that you do. The message is admirable and the cut-out cover enticing, but the greatest joy is in the comic expressions, hand-wrought images and witty detail. I have even talked the head into a little revamp of the library so that we can display them properly! They would also only drop off a case of books and leave us to run it – it was so lovely to have you on hand to chat to the children and recommend them books, as well as the small (but appreciated!Emily Gravett's engaging woodland creatures will appeal to fans of such classics as The Animals of Farthing Wood and The Wind in the Willows and the rhythmic, rhyming text is perfect for reading aloud. Deforestation, development of towns, endangered animals and climate change are a few of the themes this book introduces for discussion or exploration.
