Description

The beauty of the Sonos system is that you can start with one speaker, and later add more to the system in different rooms – as many speakers as you like up to 32 (in case you happen to live in a palace). These extra services are available from within a “More Music” submenu, but can only be added to the main menu once you’re signed in with your Sonos user name.

Speaker | Sonos Five: Our Most Powerful Wireless Hi-Fi Speaker | Sonos

That didn't happen – the Five remains Sonos's biggest speaker, and it's still a decent option if spatial audio isn't a deal-breaker. Britta is the Deputy Editor of Pocket-lint and has been a part of the team, covering consumer technology since 2012. The usual Sonos qualities also continue to shine through, from excellent build, streaming from Spotify, Napster and internet radio, and brilliant format support – although we would like to see high-res studio masters included in a future update. You can also link two Play:3s together to make a stereo pair, and now, thanks to an update, stream music directly from your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch. Spatial audio, Bluetooth and the USB-C line-in make it Sonos's most versatile speaker yet, but it's the audio performance that's ultimately more refined and more capable. Sonos’s speaker units are traditionally thought of as multi-room devices, but the Play:3 can happily replace an iPod dock for many.

Sonos Play:3 review | TechRadar

It has Wi-Fi built-in, but if your connection to cables runs deep, there’s also an Ethernet port to connect directly. You might be planning on pairing the two devices in this way, but if you have overlooked the fact that one of these two components is not Bluetooth-enabled, then you might be thoroughly disappointed when you find out that you have to seek out another solution. The Play:3 wants to disappear into your living room, not assault your eyeballs every time you enter it. These will really only work for streaming music, so it is best to choose another option when using the Sonos surround sound speaker system for your in-home movie viewing needs. Denon has a Play:3 equivalent in its Heos range, while in 2018 Harmon Kardon announced the Citation rangethat pretty much offers the same speaker portfolio as Sonos but with Google Assistant on board and a couple of extras, including tower speakers and specific rear channel speakers. The back is perforated with much larger holes than the front, giving the radiator’s output free passage. Credit where credit is due, for a device that is 18 months off being a decade old, it's only now started showing its age, which is pretty phenomenal for a piece of technology.

Sonos officially discontinue PLAY:3 - the details Sonos officially discontinue PLAY:3 - the details

It can handle the incredibly low-frequency blasts of dubstep music in a clear and even way, where most units of this size simply can’t. These will enhance the audio quality in your surround sound speaker system as you connect them all through the Sonos App. While this might seem obvious to some, it can be a complete oversight to even the most experienced audio enthusiast. There’s no dedicated subwoofer, just a passive radiator on the back to help improve the bass response. The chances are, therefore, that there is also a plan for the Play:3 - and there probably has been for years.

Once you have speakers all over you house, you can control them all from the free controller app on iOS or Android. The main reason why using AirPlay to turn your Sonos speakers into Mac speakers isn't a great option is the connection will constantly get disrupted.
