There’s just one fly in LG’s ointment: the Samsung Q9FN. It’s similarly priced and excels in its own ways. It doesn’t have the lighting precision, but it can get almost as dark, and a whole lot brighter too – that’s a huge dynamic range. For those homes with numerous windows or bright lights, the Samsung manages a more versatile picture. The storage humidity shows the lower and upper humidity limit, which ensures safe storage of the display. Storing it outside these limits might damage the display. If only all smart TVs were this intuitive; Android TV (favoured by Philips and Sony Bravia TVs) has a lot to learn. The closest alternative is the launcher bar system used by Samsung, but even that isn’t as silky-smooth nor snappy as webOS.

The internal speakers do some good spatial work, offering a good spread of sound as Quill splashes around the planet of Morag. It doesn’t project the sound forward to the viewer particularly well – everything stays rather in the same vertical plane as the TV screen – but there’s a feeling of movement as the geysers blast columns of water around Quill. The bottom end notes don’t quite hit you in the chest, but your ears still feel it even if the rest of your body doesn’t. We’ve compared Samsung’s premium Q9FN range to LG’s C8 series, and there isn’t much between them. The C8 just edges it due to the TV’s more rounded performance, but the there truly isn’t much in it. Opt for either range and you won’t be disappointed.

Information about the number of pixels on the horizontal and vertical side of the screen. A higher resolution allows the display of a more detailed and of higher quality image.

Dimensions, weight and color Information about the dimensions and the weight of the specific model with and without stand as well as the colors, in which it is offered to the market. Width It will never sound as good as a dedicated soundbar but it’s certainly an improvement, and the fact that the Alpine stand also looks nice is an added bonus. This means white surgical gowns are brighter, water has an extra glisten, and details in darker scenes are more obvious on the Samsungs than this (or any) LG. When ‘The Shimmer’ erupts into a fireball, filling the screen, you can appreciate the Samsungs’ peak intensity over the LG, too. FOR: Brighter, punchier and sharper than previous OLEDs; fantastically natural images; amazing upscaling; stylish design; perfect viewing angles LG remains one of the best for gaming, however. The low-latency Game Mode displayed an input lag measurement of around 21ms. A less scientific approach: my week with the LG C8 OLED had me perform consistently better than my week with the Sony AF8. The company’s making lots of noise about its ThinQ AI, which combines with enhanced voice recognition to make controlling the TV with your voice smarter and more natural. It does work, and can certainly prove a useful shortcut to the odd picture setting (“turn on Game Mode”, for example), but we haven’t discovered a great many uses beyond that. LG TV can recognise major High Dynamic Range formats such as HLG, HDR 10, Dolby Vision™ and Technicolor. So you get the HDR experience, no matter what HDR entertainment you're enjoying.
