Even worse, most shots suffer from edge halos, quick pans tend to pixelate the image, and cityscapes are smeared and shifty. Using their battle experience, they've been able to isolate their little patch of land from the surrounding chaos. Selena's steely resolve begins to soften, while Jim's experiences on the trip begin to toughen him up. Gathering his wits about him, he stumbles out into London's streets, now empty and looking like they've undergone some terrible calamity. Much more introspective than most programs of its ilk, “Rage” starts with an extended discussion of the worldwide potential for deadly disease.

Granted, many movies of this ilk use similar conditions, but most don’t seem quite as predictable as Later. Edge haloes became a consistent distraction, and much of the movie suffered from blockiness, jaggies and shimmering. I can see the parallels Boyle is establishing between isolation and insanity, but I think the last act could've been more focused and unique. Because director Danny Boyle chose to shoot Later almost totally on standard-def digital video (DV) cameras, that made the picture tough to rate.While an argument can (and I’m sure, will) be made for Boyle's directorial intentions, in my book it can't justify a higher video score for this one. My guess is that this release was mostly done as a tie-in for the film's sequel, 28 Weeks Later, and less as a tent pole release for the format. Still, the audio offers a pleasing upgrade from the muddy sound package on the DVD, and fans will be happy to hear the improvements.

Selena and Mark rescue him from the horde and bring him up to date on the mass carnage and horror as all of London tore itself apart. The best horror films use the monsters as a means to an end, and Boyle ably follows in the footsteps of the masters, while still making a picture that is undeniably his own. If anyone were vulnerable, regardless of race, creed, sexual orientation, or even geographic location, are our societies sufficiently stable enough to hold up against such an onslaught?
