Being able to spread the sycamore seeds has had a more profound impact on our students than I could have hoped for. Amy Zoldan demonstrates incredible versatility as she glides from drama teacher to immature teenager to deeply in love girlfriend. This project is a collaboration between Wizard and the DSM foundation, a drug education charity working with young people, parents, teachers and professionals across the UK. The words of the title are the last ones spoken by sixteen-year-old Daniel Spargo-Mabbs to his mother. David Chafer (Mark) is perfectly hesitant as he explores Dan’s life from Year 7 onwards with his friends.

Although it is similar in themes to his other works, it's a very literal piece – the way in which the words of real-life friends and family are crafted into the text makes it so eloquent and beautiful. Theatre in education is an effective genre to inform, to educate and to make real life situations relatable and to prompt us to ask questions about how and why things happen.

I love you Mum and I promise I won’t die is intended to be performed as two separate one act plays, but I feel it works just as well, if not better, as a two act play. It is deeply moving, truly heartbreaking, and challenging as it touches on what we can do to help stop this happening to others. I Love You, Mum – I Promise I Won’t Dietells the story of Daniel Spargo-Mabbs and his heartbreaking and entirely unnecessary death. A verbatim play written by Mark Wheeller using the testimonies of Daniel Spargo-Mabbs’ friends and family. The mission of this play is to spread awareness, educate young people and their families and potentially avoid more unnecessary deaths.

It was her idea, in those early months after Dan died, that we consider using drama as a means of communicating our important messages to young people. Through his incredible skill, and the huge talent and commitment of the young people and team of Oasis Youth Theatre, these raw words were transformed into a stunning performance that brought the audience to tears at each of its performances.

I Love You, Mum – I Promise I Won’t Dietells the tragic true story of the death of Daniel Spargo-Mabbs following an MDMA overdose. There is a range of resources available for anyone working with the play, whether in drama lessons, school, college or youth theatre performances, or studying it for GCSE or BTEC assessments. I was sitting in the same row as the people who were being re-created on stage and it was an unusual experience.

Alysha Jade Patis - OYT performerThis poignant and eminently readable biography of the play is drawn from interviews with Dan’s family, friends and the OYT company. Students will learn that there's always a choice and that the risks associated with drug use are incredibly high. Daniel was intelligent, funny, given to moments of wild clowning, but essentially serious, a member of Amnesty International and devoted to other charitable work. A spine chilling monologue about the funeral is well acted and so poignant that it could stand alone. We hope this will bring the play to many more drama studios and classrooms across the country and around the world, with its important messages of risk, choice and consequence, friendship, forgiveness, love and loss. Then the first half consists of wild dancing separating out the verbatim interviews with Mark Wheeller. Predicated partly on Black History Month, Elayne Ogbeta’s muliti-layered play presents Grandad (Marcus Hercules) and his primary school age granddaughter, Abi (Jazmine Wilkinson) in his garden. Wheeller manages to find moments of much needed energy, excitement and, at times, light humour – this juxtaposition makes every word of the play even more impactful.
