In 2021 Samsung launched no less than six QN90A models, ranging in size from just 43 inches all the way up to a monster 98 inches, and with 50, 55, 65 and 75 inch models filling in the gaps. Apart from a) the alarmingly high pricing for UK customers relative to their American counterparts and b) some localized weirdness in pricing (a 50-inch version of the QB90B that costs the same as the 55-inch version in the US?), the most obvious takeaway is that there’s really not all that much to choose where pricing is concerned – though we're already seeing discounts on Samsung's 2022 TVs, so watch for the latest prices, which will change this balance slightly. There are improvements from getting the QN90B, no question. If the extra peak brightness and anti-reflection coating of the QN90B will help visibility over reflections in your living room, it's worth it. The two additional drivers as part of the integrated audio system does make a difference too. And if you need something where the family will sit at sideways angles while watching, the QN90B might be better option. From gloomy shadows to sun-scorched scenes – see the spectacular detail in every shot, exactly as you’re meant to. Thanks to leading HDR brightness, you'll see it in all true-to-life quality with rich colour and remarkable contrast. Plus, with Adaptive HDR10+ every frame is optimised to perfection, so that every movie you watch looks just as the director intended.

That remote carries more buttons but is still practical enough to control if you’ve got small enough fingers to press the smaller buttons. The smart remote is the less cluttered option for those who don’t like to be assaulted with buttons they’ll never use. It also comes with a solar panel that absorbs ambient light to charge itself or can be charged via USB-C. Rounding out the QE50QN90B’s impressive feature count is its Tizen-based smart interface. This remains as good as ever when it comes to content, with pretty much every streaming app you can think of present and correct, bolstered by Samsung’s increasingly impressive (due to it being more carefully curated) TV Plus system of fully streamed TV ‘channels’. While the QE50QN90B joins other Samsung 2022 smart TVs in excelling on content quantity, though, it also labours under the same unhelpful new interface design. This can be sluggish when the TV is first switched on, can be confusing to navigate, and has a tendency to highlight content most people won’t actually be interested in.

That pricing puts it in among the LG OLED55C2, Philips 55OLED807 and Sony XR-55A75K as competing options. Design The Samsung QN90B and QN85B are extremely similar in design, with just some finish and stand variations, really. (Image credit: Samsung)

The QN90B is a second gen Neo QLED Mini LED TV, and it’s another exceptionally bright effort that boasts wide-ranging colours. I do think, however, there’s a case to be made that too much brightness is not always a great thing. They use the same Neo Quantum Processor 4K picture processing engine. They’re both compatible with Samsung’s ‘Q Symphony’ range of soundbars (which allow the TV’s audio system to continue to contribute even if a soundbar is attached). They both come with a couple of remote controls – a nice solar-powered one, and a nastier battery-powered alternative. Samsung describes the QE50QN90B as a Neo QLED model, alerting us to the fact that it uses Quantum Dots to generate its colours rather than colour filters. This should, if other aspects of the TV are also up to snuff, result in a wider and more subtle colour gamut well suited to the extra colour range that typically accompanies high dynamic range content. What’s more, despite the sophistication of its processing engine and lighting system, the QE50QN90B manages to get the time it takes to render images in its Game mode down to a hugely impressive 9.6ms (with 1080p/60Hz signals). Samsung’s Game Bar does, though, provide the option to sacrifice a bit of screen response speed in return for better, processing-assisted picture quality, along with other game-related adjustments such as the ability to raise the brightness of dark areas without impacting the rest of the picture so that you can more easily see enemies lurking in the dark. We uploaded the brightness measurements and uniformity photos after running the TV for four months in our Accelerated Longevity Test.

Updated text for clarity throughout to match the results after various Test Bench updates. Also confirmed that 1440p works with the PS5.Picture-wise, the 43-inch QN90B disappoints in three ways. First, like other Samsung TVs, it doesn’t support Dolby Vision, so you won’t get the most out of movies and TV that do. Its off-angle viewing isn’t the worst, but the screen’s colors lose a lot of their inherent richness and take a grayish cast if you’re positioned too far from the center of the screen in any direction. (Samsung touts a feature on the QN90B line called Ultra Viewing Angle, which is supposed to mitigate this, but it is included only on the 50-inch and larger models.) Because this is a smaller set, that’s unlikely to be a critical problem, but keep it in mind. It also has a little bit of trouble generating fine detail in some of its picture modes: In Cinema and Filmmaker, fine details occasionally get a little mushy in a way they don’t in Standard and Dynamic. (This was particularly evident in all the 1-pixel sections of one of our chief 4K test patterns.) Sit far enough away, and you’re unlikely to notice, but it has the potential to distract if you’re too close. Prices valid in stores (all including VAT) until close of business on 28th November 2023. (Some of these web prices are cheaper than in-store, so please mention that you've seen these offers online.) Both of these potentially significant new picture advantages are powered by an even more powerful version of Samsung’s AI-based picture analysis/processing system. This is able to draw on the accumulated picture analysis knowledge of a massive 20 neural networks versus the 16 deployed for the QN90A, delivering even more accurate, effective and natural enhancements to every image. Bigger TVs aren’t always better, but they are where you usually see the most impressive performance and innovations in the market. Smaller sets may still get some of the good features, but it’s not just for purposes of showing off that TV lovers gravitate toward larger models. Most of the time, you really do get what you pay for.

The entire process is slow and clunky, if a necessary evil given the remote’s limitations (see the next section). Other interfaces are much more user-friendly, some (particularly Google TV) while offering you even more up-front information and better suggestions about what to watch. Does Tizen get the job done? Yes, but Samsung could do better, and hopefully will in the not-too-distant future. Samsung QN90B Neo QLED TV: Remote Also, an irritating bugbear is that upon start-up the TV lands on the Media hub, and the interface will go straight to the last channel/input you were on. With a PS5 plugged in, it constantly switched it on every single time. You need cat-like speed to stop it from happening, but with the sluggish response of the smart remote, I frequently failed. Features The Samsung QN85B (pictured) and QN90B both feature four HDMI ports, all with HDMI 2.1 support. (Image credit: Future) It all means that the QN90B should be more visible during daytime in bright rooms – between the extra brightness and the anti-reflective screen, you're less likely to be seeing yourself instead of the picture.

The Samsung QN90B is available in Canada, Australia, the United States, the UK and Europe, which is something of a surprise given it’s usually the flagship model that’s more widely available (the QN95B is not on sale in Canada). Sat head-on, there’s slight blooming to night-time scenes like the opening of the She-Hulk episode Ribbit and Rip It. I can see a slight haze surrounding the lights in the car park as Leapfrog tries (and fails) to take on a couple of robbers. Move off-axis and the blooming becomes more noticeable.
