Description

Put the rum, sugar syrup, lime juice and cold water into a tall glass with ice and the bitters (or jug, if making multiple drinks) and stir to combine. Here is how the author describes bail bondsman Max Cherry, one of the main characters, through the eyes of Ordell, another main character: "The man himself appeared neat, cleanshaved, had his blue shirt open, no tie, good size shoulders on him. That dark, tough-looking type of guy like Lewis, dark hair, only Max Cherry was losing his on top. Up in his fifties somewhere. He could be Eyetalian, except Ordell had never met a bail bondsman wasn't Jewish." ----- That's it-short, crisp, a few telling details. THANK YOU for all of your support, for visiting my blog, commenting, and sharing my recipes with your friends and family. I am SO thankful for you! It is good to leave the rum punch to sit for a while before serving. So you can make the rum punch an hour or two before the party starts. But remember not to add ice! Can Rum Punch Get You Drunk?

Rum Punch - Elmore Leonard - Google Books

Add a bit of zing: Using spices is optional. It’s not traditionally used when making rum punch, but try it and see if you like it. This easy-to-make rum punch is made with simple ingredients; fruit punch, pineapple juice, lime and of course the rum! And if you want to spice up your rum punch, add a pinch of nutmeg or cinnamon. Elmore Leonard's novel "Rum Punch" (1992) tells a tangled tale of crime, violence and double-crossing written in a punchy style with sharp dialogue. The plot is confusing to follow at first, but it works out. Most of the story is set in West Palm Beach, Florida; but the setting is not the primary focus of the book. The main interest of the work lies in the snappy writing and in the characters and their relationships.

Hook - 2 stars: "Sunday morning, Ordell took Louis to watch the white-power demonstration in downtown Palm Beach." Yep, and you know this area well as you'll find Mira Lago there today. Yep, that opener is stupendous in timeliness. And the next lines, right out of today's headlines, "Young skinhead Nazis," Ordell said. "Look, even little Nazigirls marching down Worth Avenue. You believe it?" Now, those lines certainly grab your attention (and you either keep reading or you stop). The problem is, these lines have almost nothing to do with the rest of the entire book. Now we have a free for all. Everybody now has a scheme to get their hands on the money. All the villains are lying to each other. The police are lying to the villains and the villains are lying to the police. As I have said “it’s a free for all”.

Ordell Robbie and Louis Gara first appeared in Leonard's 1978 novel, The Switch. Fourteen years later, Ordell has become a thief and minor-league gun runner while Louis is fresh out of prison. Also returning is Ordell's sometime girlfriend, Melanie. Ordell has a big score in mind that involves ripping off the leader of a group of white supremacists, and he recruits his old pal Louis to give him a hand, dangling Melanie before him as bait. Rule: Avoid using exclamation points (in other words, Leonard is telling us to let the action itself communicate power and excitement). When I first read a book by the late Elmore Leonard—one of the best-known crime authors in the world—I was 12 years old and fresh off a Clive Barker binge. I needed a change of pace. When I finished reading Rum Punch, about an airline stewardess caught in a money-couriering scheme, I instantly thought, “Someone better make a movie of this book.” It was brash, smart, and so compelling I gobbled it upwithin two days. The oldest recipes seem to come in the form of easily memorisable rhymes – one quoted in the New York Times in 1908 calls for: “Two [measures] of sour, one and a half of sweet, three of strong and four of weak”, while Fun directs the reader toYes, rum punch can get you drunk. But it depends on the amount you drink, your body mass and whether you’re male or female. Strain into a smaller cold glass half-full of ice, top with a grating of nutmeg and gaudy garnish to taste. The novel's opening line: "Sunday morning, Ordell took Louis to watch the white-power demonstration in downtown Palm Beach." ----- A gripping scene right from the start; not a prologue or mention of the weather in sight.

RUM PUNCH | Kirkus Reviews

I recall someone saying how Elmore Leonard isn't old school `cause he built the school. Very true. My favorite Elmore Leonard novels are Tishomingo Blues and Pagan Babies; Rum Punch is my very favorite, thus this review. Also, in addition to reviewing the book, let me plug the audiobook read by Joe Mantegna. The voice of Joe Mantegna is pitch-perfect, his rhythm and inflections capturing each of the characters, male and female, as well as the mood and charged atmosphere of the entire story. Jamaican rum punch is a fruity drink with a rum base. This tropical rum is popular among tourists and Jamaicans alike. You might think two-and-a-half hours is an awfully long time to chill out with characters, but that’s the beauty of a Leonard-Tarantino relationship, one that points to Tarantino’s ascension as a more mature director compared to his first two works: we don’t need on-screen violence and gore (looking at you, Reservoir Dogs) to engage us with every scene. Instead, we empathize with characters who might be wise guys and crooks, but whose humanity comes through with every conversation, every gesture between lines.

Four years later, I watched Pulp Fiction (1994) for the first time and wondered if Tarantino and Leonard had long been buddies, because I saw so many similarities in the snappy dialogue and rounded portrayals of underworld baddies and the cop out to collar them. Although golden rum is my usual drink of choice, here I think the dark sort makes more sense; its treacly, molasses quality stands up well to the other ingredients. Clean-cut white rum drowns in the welter of sweet and sour, and even the more emphatic demerara-like qualities of golden are wasted; a rum punch demands a blunderbuss in the form of the dark stuff. Syrup: I am using Grace strawberry, but you could also use cherry syrup. Use any syrup as long as it is a red fruit syrup. Dialogue. As well as the plot, it's all about the dialogue here because there is just so much of it. It is screaming MOVIE! right in your face; it is screaming TARANTINO! And in the end they came together like syrup on a pancake.

Rum Punch by Elmore Leonard | Waterstones

Gente qualsiasi, ordinary people dell’underworld. Rule: Avoid detailed descriptions of characters and don't go into great detail describing places or things. Leonard takes the phrase ‘There’s no honour amongst thieves’ and cranks it up more than a few notches. All the characters here are villains. Some are nice and some are down right horrible but they’re all villains just the same. I’m not surprised that Tarantino’s studio bought the rights to five of Leonard’s books, even though several of those acquisitions lapsed and landed those books in less-competent directorial hands.

Customer Reviews

What I recognized in Tarantino’s first adaptationof a Leonard book, especially after multiple viewings, were the unspoken parallels between director and writer. It’s as if they were destined for this prefect duet of spotlighting the action and character development within dialogue, as opposed to trigger-happy action scenes and pointed exposition. Larousse follows the same sort of ratios, which give an easy-drinking, but still defiantly poky punch.
