Monkey Shoulder is a tribute to all the malt men around the world that turn the malted barley by hand. The traditional malt whiskey distillation process involved the malted barley being turned over (mixed) by hand using wooden paddles and shovels. Often, this laborious process would cause injury to the shoulders of these upstanding gentlemen. To find some relief from the pain, they would hang their arms low like monkeys.
