Answer: It most certainly is, not only is Monkey Shoulder an intricate blend of three premium whiskeys but it is born of generations of passion and rich distilling heritage. Premium whiskeys such as Kininvie, Glenfiddich, and Balvenie don’t belong in discount bins or on bottom shelves but belong up on the top shelf with the best whiskeys in the world. Conclusion

Daniel W: Jim, I agree with you 100% Glenmorangie 10 is a perfect dram for a beginner. The sweetness makes it very accessible. As you may have noticed from my own blog articles, I’m a firm believer that whisky is there to be drunk rather than stored. My advice always is that if you find yourself in possession of a very special bottle of whisky drink it over a year or so on special occasions and then keep the empty bottle as a nice reminder of the original gift and story and also the special occasions when you drank really special whisky. Is Old Haig Whisky Safe to Drink?

Steve Rivkin, Fraser Sutherland, The Making of a Name: The Inside Story of the Brands We Buy, p. 125 The second bottle is again Dimple with a similar label showing Dimple old Blend Scotch Whisky, John Haig and Co Ltd, Markinch Scotland, with a different coat of arms this being by appointment to Her Majesty. On the front of the bottle is the label Dimple. The bottom of the bottle has 3 lines of text molded: the first is “14”, then HAIG & HAIG LTD.” then “SCOTLAND” Sometimes, things don’t go your way. Sometimes—SPOILER ALERT—you're the subject of a nationwide manhunt, you've fled to frosty New Hampshire, and you're about to intentionally reveal your location to your family and law enforcement officials. It's times like these that you’d probably turn to a glass of whiskey. And if you’re Walter White on Breaking Bad, you’d probably make it Dimple Pinch, neat. If the label has both Edinburgh and Markinch mentioned then you may have an unusual bottle! Haig Whisky became a Limited company in 1894 with registered offices in Edinburgh. With expansion of the Markinch production facility after World War 2, the registered offices were moved there in 1952 and thereafter, bottles carried just Markinch on the label. Haig Whisky bottled during the transition period during the build of the new HQ between 1950 and late 1952 carried both place names.

Monkey Shoulder is a tribute to all the malt men around the world that turn the malted barley by hand. The traditional malt whiskey distillation process involved the malted barley being turned over (mixed) by hand using wooden paddles and shovels. Often, this laborious process would cause injury to the shoulders of these upstanding gentlemen. To find some relief from the pain, they would hang their arms low like monkeys. This injury became known as “Monkey Shoulder” and is the inspiration for this exceptional blend. Although John Haig & Co’s is best known for its success in the grain and blended whisky market – by 1939 the Haig blend was the best-selling whisky in Britain – for some time it held the licenses for a handful of DCL’s malt distilleries, including Glenkinchie, Glenlossie and Mannochmore. My dad loved his Dimple whisky and only poured a glass on special occasions. Remember, that was the 80’s in South Africa, so the whisky variety was minimal. It is not a bad whisky, but I found it a bit forgettable. It starts delicate but gets better on sip 2 or 3. More flavour comes to the front after a few drops of water. The whisky itself should be quite nice as it is a blend of Scotch Malt and Single Grain whiskies, probably from Glenkichnie, Linkwood and Camoronbridge Distillerys. Haig ( / h eɪ ɡ/) is a brand of Scotch whisky, produced by Diageo in Scotland. It was originally manufactured by John Haig & Co Ltd. since the early 1720s. [1] Products [ edit ]

Water: All three of the Speyside Distilleries use crystal clear spring water from the nearby Robbie Dhu spring. Natural spring water is ideal for producing world-class whiskey as it contains large amounts of natural minerals and high levels of purity. Hopefully, that’s enough to keep you all going and give you a better idea of the age of your bottle of Haig! I’ll add more info to this blog article as I think of it so it becomes a one stop shop for the question “How old is my old bottle of Haig Dimple Pinch!” Most current variations of the Haig brand are produced using spirits from Diageo's Glenkinchie distillery and Linkwood distillery.

Welcome!

By 1939 the combination of the Dimple and Gold Label brand extensions made Haig the top-selling Scotch in the UK, while Dimple Pinch had recovered its pre-Prohibition sales in the States. Percy S: The OP 12 may take the throne for me after further tasting, but at the moment I have to give it to Glengoyne 12. I feel it represents the basics of scotch whisky as I think of it best. Good value and readily available. Clayton F: I often buy Balvenie 12yr double wood for anyone starting out, not to aggressive but not boring either. Fiddich 12yr is a pretty good starter also, easy to find too. Oh so many starters!!!
