Pérez and Tosh's investigation leads them to Glasgow, where they hope to uncover the truth behind Maguire's brutal death and his connection to Robbie Morton. Old ghosts return to haunt Pérez, with his enemies trying to prevent him from getting to the truth. On 20 July 2022, it was announced that Shetland would return without Henshall in 2023 for an eighth series. [5] Jensen was revealed as his replacement on 24 November that same year. When you began writing the first Shetland book, did you envisage it becoming a series? If so, how did you see the characters developing and did this change as the series progressed? Ann Cleeves is one of the most popular and prolific British crime writers of recent years, and few fans of British mysteries will be unaware of her Shetland novels. That doesn't mean it's easy to keep them all straight, though. Shortly before series 7 premiered, Henshall announced that the series would be his last. [22] It was then announced that he would be replaced in the leading role by Ashley Jensen from Series 8 onwards. [23] Cast [ edit ] Main cast [ edit ] Douglas Henshall (Jimmy Perez) and Ann Cleeves (author) at Bloody Scotland International Crime Writing Festival, 2017 Current [ edit ]Tosh survives the blast but is reluctant to talk to anyone about what happened. The caravan's owner says he rented it to Connor. Pérez believes Connor killed Bryd and issues a warrant for his arrest. Visiting bomb expert DI Brookes thinks Connor had the knowledge to construct the bomb and might have links to a terrorist group. After talking with Danny, Pérez realizes that environmental activism was a theme of everything Connor did. Connor is found dead on the beach. At first it appears he threw himself from the cliff, but the autopsy finds he was tortured before being murdered the same way Bryd was. It appears like someone is trying to suggest that Connor killed Bryd and then himself. Abbie is suspicious of Martin and searches his room with help from her friend Clana, discovering a hidden camera card. Pérez and Tosh find the place – an abandoned church – where Connor and Bryd were held and killed. Sandy finds that Lloyd went to the same school as Rodgers under a different name. When Brookes gives Tosh a coat button that she'd lost in the explosion, she finally breaks down, calls Donnie and asks him to bring her home. A glorious book! Incredible photos, and text lovingly written by a "smoothmoother" (soothmoother = Shetland for incomer), the main Shetland islands are presented through all the seasons (and the author explains that she wrote the Shetland series of books based on the seasons, thoughtfully done), as well as some of her ideas that became plots for the books. This is a coffee table book, but also a very personal look at the diversity and beauty of the islands. In regards to the characters, Jimmy Perez develops because there are tragedies in his life. His former wife says that he's 'emotionally incontinent'. Perhaps he gives too much sympathy and compassion to his colleagues, to the victims and even to the offenders. He doesn't have much kindness left for the people close to him. By the end of the series I hope his priorities have slightly changed. Andrea Doyle tells Pérez that she and McGuire are "just the tip of the iceberg" and that if the ransom isn't paid and they can't get Zezi off the island, McGuire will kill her. The team travels to the house where the girls had been kept but only finds Niki's body. They find the house belongs to Duncan, who claims it should be vacant. Tosh finds that Olivia's alibi for the Hayes murders is invalid. Olivia threatens to drive the car with her and Jamie in it off a cliff but is stopped by Pérez. Sandy is questioned about events around Calum's suicide. The team arranges for Olivia to call McGuire and offer to pay the ransom. Upon arriving at the dropoff, McGuire receives a call alerting him to the setup and drives off. He goes off the road, but the team finds Zezi is not in the van. Worried about Cassie and his business problems, Duncan drinks until he passes out on the beach. The next morning he finds four bodies in the water. a b "Crime drama Shetland triumphs at Bafta Scotland". BBC News Scotland. BBC. 7 November 2016 . Retrieved 14 February 2017. When a young man disappears on a ferry crossing and a small boy ends up in intensive care after overdosing on Ecstasy, Pérez and the team become convinced the two events are connected. In Dead Water the body of a journalist is discovered and Inspector Jimmy Perez who has been out of the loop after the horrible tragedy in the previous book Blue Lightning is summoned to use his local expertise to help Willow solve the murder. The dead journalist had left the island many years before to pursue a writing career in London leaving a scandal that involved a young girl in his wake. Upon digging deeper, the detectives realize that the journalist had been chasing a story that most Shetlanders wanted untouched. They must discover exactly what made him a target and who killed him. The broadcast of Episode 6 was delayed due to coverage of an FA Cup replay being broadcast. In contrast to Season 2 (three 2-part episodes), Season 3 is one 6-part story. a b "New crime drama for BBC one starring Douglas Henshall". BBC Media Centre. BBC. 2014 . Retrieved 14 February 2017.Ann Cleeve's bestselling series of crime novels featuring Detective Jimmy Perez, and now also adapted for a major BBC television series, is inspired by the place where the stories are set: Shetland. Red Bones is book 3 in Ann Cleeves’ Shetland Island series. In the midst of the rugged beauty of Whalsay, a remote island, a young archaeologist’s remarkable discovery stirs the curiosity of the island’s inhabitants. Unearthing human remains from the past, the find ignites speculation—could it be an ancient relic, or does it conceal a more contemporary enigma? Australia: The programme airs on BBC First [33] and ABC in Australia. Series 1-4 is also available on Netflix (Series 1 and 2 are combined and listed as Series 1, then Series 3 and 4 are listed as Series 2 and 3 respectively). An archipelago of more than a hundred islands, it is the one of the most remote places in the United Kingdom. Its fifteen hundred miles of shore mean that wherever one stands, there is a view of the sea. It has sheltered voes and beaches and dramatically exposed cliffs, lush meadows full of wild flowers in the summer and bleak hilltops where only the hardiest of plants will grow. It is a place where traditions are valued and celebrated, but new technologies and ways of working are also embraced. Also starring are Alison O'Donnell as DS Alison "Tosh" McIntosh and Steven Robertson as DC Sandy Wilson. Lewis Howden and Anne Kidd are also principal members of the cast.
