Description

Throughout the year the MV Eilean Dhiura runs a regular service between Feolin on Jura and Port Askaig on Islay, with frequent sailings from 7.30am to 6.30pm Mon-Sat and a reduced Sunday schedule. This service is run by Argyll and Bute Council. Beginning in the later 18th century, long before the notorious Highland Clearances of the following century, there were several waves of emigration from Jura. In 1767, fifty people left for Canada, and from then the population fluctuated, rising to a peak of 1,312 in 1831, before gradually shrinking to its 20th century level of just a few hundred. Mercer notes [27] that although relatively few forced clearances on Jura were recorded, the emigrations were due to factors such as hunger and spiralling rents.

Taste: Creamy vanilla followed by chocolate orange creams. A little bit of oak. Subtle pepper and a hint of peat on the finish. With time in the glass, a little more of that sherry finish comes through. It’s not huge, but there’s a definite dried fruits note. The colour is a deep golden yellow and the nose is instantly sugary and sweet. Aromas of icing sugar and butterscotch dominate with a underlying whiff of soft and sweet peat smoke. Depth is added by an almond-like nuttiness, dried orange peel and warming spices (think of clove and cinnamon especially), plus hints cranberry and pot pourri. Paul McHugh (15 March 2009). "Finding Orwell's Source of Hope in Jura, Scotland". The Washington Post. General Register Office for Scotland (28 November 2003) Scotland's Census 2001 – Occasional Paper No 10: Statistics for Inhabited Islands. Retrieved 26 February 2012. Evidence of settlements on Jura dating from the Mesolithic period was first uncovered by the English archaeologist John Mercer in the 1960s. [21] There is a Neolithic chambered cairn at Poll a' Cheo in the southwest of the island. [22]Jura is closer to Ireland's northern province of Ulster than it is to Glasgow, so it should not be unexpected that Irish people crossed the Straits of Moyle and established the Gaelic kingdom of Dál Riata. It was divided into a handful of regions, controlled by particular kin groups, of which the Cenél nÓengusa controlled Jura and Islay. [ citation needed]

William Auld. The island is the setting for the novel Burning Down George Orwell's House, by Andrew Ervin. In music, Jura is the subject of the first two movements ('Summer Sea' and 'The Paps of Jura') of the Hebridean Suite (1947) for cello and piano by Scottish composer Marie Dare. [77] Jura is mentioned in a song by R. Kennedy and D. MacDonald, recorded in 1997 by JCB with Jerry Holland on the album A Trip to Cape Breton; "The Bens of Jura", a song by Capercaillie; and "Isle of Jura", a song by Skyclad. The UK band Mekons recorded an album on the island in 2015 and called it 'Jura'. In 1549, Donald Monro, Dean of the Isles, wrote that the island was "ane ather fyne forrest for deire, inhabit and manurit at the coist syde", with "fresche water Loches, with meikell of profit" and an abundance of salmon. [71] [Note 1] In 1390, Donald Macdonald, Lord of the Isles, granted the MacLeans the lands of northern Jura (the lands which had belonged to the MacInnes). The MacLeans established a castle in Glen Garrisdale, as a stronghold, which they named Aros Castle, like one of their castles elsewhere. [ citation needed]

The Jura distillery is located on the Hebredean isle of Jura and was founded in 1810 by Archibald Campbell. It was originally called the Small Isles distillery after the numerous islands located in Craighouse Bay, which the distillery sits on and overlooks. It was closed for a long period between 1901 and 1960, at which point it was rebuilt using a design by renowned post-War distillery architect William Delmé-Evans. It was only then renamed as Jura. Fast forward to 2018 and I was intrigued to hear that the brand was launching a complete new range with a new house style. I’ve spent the last couple of years getting acquainted with the new releases and while I haven’t become a member of the fan club or anything, I can definitely see the brand taking steps in the right direction. In 2018 a new business hub opened in Craighouse consisting of four units adjacent to the community petrol pumps. These currently house three local businesses - a photography gallery, Deer Island rum distillery, and a craft shop - as well as the local bus garage.Ruantallain: immediately north of Loch Tarbert. Ruantallain had been a part of the Tarbert Estate, until its sale in 1984. It is owned by businessman Lindsay Bury, [52] who is a former president of the influential wildlife charity Flora and Fauna International. Leading independent bottler, Douglas Laing & Co, have revealed their Old Particular Cheers to Better Days mini-series. Jura Forest: also lying north of Ardfin, but on the east flanks of the Paps of Jura. Forest Estate belongs to the Vestey family,, which was headed until 2021 by Samuel, 3rd Baron Vestey, chairman of the food and farming business Vestey Group Ltd, and a former Master of the Horse of the Royal Household. The owner is now his eldest son William Vestey, 4th Baron Vestey. [50]

On the nose: Crème Caramel, toffee apple, milk chocolate, burnt toast, heather, leather and honey. The sherry influence is there, but quite muted. There’s a bit of earthy mustiness to it all, and an unexpected hint of fresh putty; I never expected a whisky to remind me of a bathroom refurb!A tour of Orwell's Jura, where he wrote 1984". The Guardian. 8 June 2019. The house where George Orwell penned his masterpiece, published 70 years ago today, has hardly changed, nor has the brooding and remote Scottish island he loved I called the Jura 10 year old expression “dangerously drinkable,” and this 12 year old is much the same. It doesn’t stray too far from the 10 year old’s formula, however; though for just 10 dollars more per bottle, the upgrade will hardly break the bank. Grab it.
