The books are still better than most on the market and are sturdy, easy to wipe clean and fun to read with their ‘open and see’ sections but the author really could have done better with the wording, it’s like a GCSE attempt at writing a rhyming poem in some points. Of course losing glasses may very well be a worrying and sad time, but must this be presented as the default response for a child learning about this scenario? Axel’s artwork is exhibited internationally; he has illustrated for many charities and designed the Royal Mail Christmas stamps in 2012.As always with Julia Donaldson, this book has a funny and bouncing rhyming text, making it great to read aloud at home.

In a nutshell, mole loses his glasses, can’t find them, becomes worried, still can’t find them so then becomes sad, is offered comfort by sweets, then finds his glasses and everything is fine again. I love these little books for my little one, but some of them are not particularly good for rhyming and this is one of them. With sturdy flaps on every spread and rhyming stories that are a joy to read aloud, Mole’s Spectacles is the sixth story in the bestselling Tales from Acorn Wood series, which features Fox’s Socks, Postman Bear, Rabbit’s Nap, Hide-and-Seek Pig, Cat’s Cookbook and Squirrel’s Snowman. What if my glasses were never found - am I supposed to feel worried and sad and comfort eat for all time?
