For a huge chunk that was placed in a different world, it was underdeveloped to the point it was like medieval earth but with all sorts of species. and if the book hadn’t been so overwritten (and so adamant on over-explaining every single minute detail and glossing over bigger, thematic pieces) i think i would have been swept away in the romance. we started off with a lot of mystery and build and it felt reminiscent of the haunting of hill house.
