Ideal foils were provided by monocled silly-ass Ralph Lynn, and bald, timid, bird-like Robertson Hare, who inevitably found himself mixed up in the middle of things, wailing “Oh Calamity! To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. England's cricket captain strives to keep his star batsman out of trouble during an Ashes series in Australia. They are presented here as brand-new transfers from original film elements in their original aspect ratio.

When two gentlemen try their best to be chivalrous, they find themselves caught on the sticky end of a series of unfortunate misunderstandings. Though only ten adaptations were made on film, the influence of these enduringly popular films was great and can be seen in some of the key British comedies from the first half of the 20th century. But, they offer plenty of smiles and even the odd belly laugh, and point a clear way to the later character ensembles of Ealing and the Boulting Brothers. If you are in Australia or New Zealand (DVD Region 4), note that almost all DVDs distributed in the UK by the BBC and 2entertain are encoded for both Region 2 and Region 4. Forged from a partnership between a university press and a library, Project MUSE is a trusted part of the academic and scholarly community it serves.

Most were penned by leading comic playwright Ben Travers and peopled by a regular cast of silly-ass aristocrats, battleaxe wives and put-upon husbands; nimble wordplay and finely crafted buffoonery were their hallmarks and the public loved them. Nevertheless, farce exploits for its own humorous or subversive purposes a constant ofhuman nature: the conflict between the rational and the animal, civilized restraint and primitive impulse, authority and licence. Two of the best farces (issued on Volume 2 of Network’s DVD series) featured other actors outside the main trio. Meanwhile, Ben Travers' first play, The Dippers, based on his 1920 novel of the same name, was produced and directed by Sir Charles Hawtrey. Things get a bit slow toward the end, but there are many funny sequences, including a dotty fantasy sequence that sends the whole cast back to the Stone Age. Project MUSE promotes the creation and dissemination of essential humanities and social science resources through collaboration with libraries, publishers, and scholars worldwide. Cuckoo in the Nest is an early version of the 1954 'Fast and Loose' (Stanley Holloway, Kay Kendal and other worthies).Lynn carries much of the comedy scenes, sneaking in and out to avoid the landlady, struggling to bed down on the floor, retrieving a dog in the rain, or rehearsing his excuses. The Aldwych farces were a series of twelve stage farces presented at the Aldwych Theatre, London, nearly continuously from 1923 to 1933. The last of them, A Bit of a Test in 1933, ran for 142 performances, compared with runs of more than 400 performances for some of the earlier productions. The scripts contain many funny lines, wordplay and situations, and the performers have honed wonderful timing through their years of association. In his place is the superb comic character Gordon Harker, who brings his rough-edged posh cockney (“Oh yerrrrrrs”) to the table.
