They could see the face now, and the well-known features coal-black hair, bright blue eyes and nose turned upwards like the nose of a Dutch doll. This time, they visit her cousin Fred Twigley, befriend a statue that has come to life, go riding on peppermint horses, and experience a garden party under the sea.

If you grew up watching the Disney classic by the same name, like myself you might have expectations for this book. It features one of my most beloved characters, Mary Poppins, who is so unique and so interesting to read about. The Dancing Cow, Robertson Ay's Story, The Cat That Looked At A King, and Every Goose A Swan, in each of the four novels respectively. The ratings/reviews displayed here may not be representative of every listing on this page, or of every review for these listings.I would recommend to both children and adults, although there are few things that might be upsetting to younger readers. Out of the glowing core of light emerged a curious figure a figure in a black straw hat and a blue coat trimmed with silver buttons.

Mary Poppins is strict but fair; and soon Michael and Jane are whisked off to a funfair inside a pavement picture and on many more outings with their wonderful new nanny! Andrew sleeps on a silk pillow in Miss Lark’s room under a fur rug, has cream and oysters and chicken breast and scrambled eggs with asparagus for his meals, is taken to the hairdressers (or ‘Hairdressers’ with a leading capital letter again, for some reason), and wears overcoats with different coloured checks and stripes, and even two pairs of boots for his four legs. But he was not a static character; his attitude changed throughout the film to finally becoming the type of affectionate father that most children would wish for, shown most prominently with him fixing his children's kite and taking them to go fly it outside. Having watched Saving Mr Banks and reading up a little about P L Travers I was aware that the books were different and I was keen to read them. I also find it interesting how Mary herself is described, obviously not in-depth as there are no in-depth descriptions as I have already lamented (!Through Russell, Travers met William Butler Yeats and other Irish poets who fostered her interest in and knowledge of world mythology.
