Signature Headgear: The strange man who haunts the three girls is frequently described as having a wide-brimmed hat, but little else, adding to the overall mystery of his presence. It's used to imply that the man is something else, as once it's described by others or shows up on-screen, someone is going to die. At the end, Beth accepts the strange man planting his hat on her head, symbolizing her acceptance that she is dead and is able to reunite with her dead family. I'm an ESL teacher and this beautiful book is an absolute gem to introduce to level A1/A2 students. It has stunning art and is very comprehensive, easy for beginners to dabble at.

My Friend Janna – This is a story about two girls who say that they can commune with the dead, but it is a hoax. Two bored girls playing a prank on the malleable. What Janna’s friend does not tell her is that Janna is haunted. There is a spirit that surrounds her, and it slowly is taking over Janna eventually until Janna disappears entirely. Our neighbor's house -- A lady's hands are cold -- His face all red -- My friend Janna -- The nesting place a b Alverson, Brigid (26 October 2015). "Comics A.M. | Emily Carroll's 'Through the Woods' wins British Fantasy Award". Comic Book Resources. An Introduction": A short introductory comic to set the mood, in which the author recalls reading in bed at night as a child. Red Is Heroic: Beth is the middle-born daughter who wears dark red clothes, and the story is narrated from her perspective. Canadian comics writer Emily Carroll has produced a graphic debut that blends the gothic strangeness of Tim Burton with the macabre illustrations of Edward Gorey to create a wonderfully chilling collection of tales...Eschewing neat endings, Carroll leaves lingering questions: how much is real and how much imagination? Is the haunting just guilt, grief, loneliness, psychosis or something supernatural? Her eerie tales will haunt you." During "In Conclusion", the young girl confidently ignores the dangers of the woods and makes it to her mother's house without incident. Actually seeing just how dangerous the woods can be, however, seems to deeply traumatize and terrify her. Damn, the whole thing is so magnificently done even the fonts are yummy as shrimp. (Which is slightly outrageous, if you ask me.)

I See Dead People: Yvonne can see something like a ghost that is haunting Janna which nobody else seems to notice. At the end of the story, after Janna has either died or disappeared, Yvonne's little sister sees one too, now haunting Yvonne instead...edited a bit for clarity): This did creep me out. The stories are good and unsettling. I am rereading Neil Gaiman's The Ocean at the End of the Lane, which is better on many levels, but this is also very good. Focused on images, of course. Initially I thought the kind of wild and splashy art actually undermined the creep-factor in places, it calls attention to itself a little too much, at times? I wasn't sure of her audience, really--is it kids? ya? adults? But when some sort of spaghetti-like material emerges from the dead but animated woman in one of the last stories, I am hooked. I am the audience. Oh holy hell—Emily Carroll's horror comic collection Through The Woods is so freaking spooky... Each little horror comic is so creepy and absolutely gorgeous. ... So turn off all the lights and curl up for a good chill." My Friend Janna is about two girls who decide to exploit the superstitions of others by pretending to speak to the dead. The Nesting Place is about a girl who goes to her brother’s house in the country and discovers his wife has a terrible secret. Gory Discretion Shot: We never see the husband's violent death upon meeting his first wife's corpse, only that one of the mansion's windows became heavily smeared with his blood after returning home from a hunt.NOTRE SÉLECTION DE RESSOURCES POUR HALLOWEEN | | La Réforme du lycée par Lelivrescolaire.fr October 10, 2019 at 11:44 am Like I said, I loved this book. Brooding, haunting, with an overwhelming sense of morbid inevitability, Through the Woods is the kind of horrific graphic novel that hits all of the right notes.

Beth wears red, her dress being dark red and her cloak being bright red. Of the sisters, it is she who later takes charge of looking after the family, considering Hannah is a young girl who can't fully grasp the situation and Mary is in denial over their father's death/disappearance. And when Mary goes missing after meeting the man with the wide-brimmed hat, Beth immediately searches all over the house for her. She also tries to brave the snowstorm while traveling to the neighbor's house alone, though by the time she reaches her destination, both she and the neighbor are already dead. I read it at night before I was going to go to bed. And when I was done, I was too unnerved to go to sleep. I had to read something else to settle myself down first. My Friend Janna": Yvonne and Janna are two close friends who have spent years pretending that they can talk to the spirits of the dead. But Yvonne actually can see what might be a ghost, and it appears to be haunting Janna. Comics are a unique medium where words and pictures play off each other to tell a story; the great ones have a perfect balance between the two. If I have one criticism of Carroll’s comics - and it really is just one - it’s that the stories feel underwritten with Carroll leaning a bit too much on the imagery to tell the story. Ironically, it ends up making some of the characters feel like the puppets they fear they’ll become rather than rounded, believable characters. Nameless Narrative: "A Lady's Hands Are Cold", "His Face All Red", and "In Conclusion" play this trope completely straight, as none of the characters get called by name. "In My Friend Janna", only Janna and the main character, Yvonne, get names. Other characters, such as Yvonne's sister or the people who come to see Janne the fake psychic go nameless. Only in "The Nesting Place" does every character who appears on screen get a name.Woerner, Meredith (17 July 2014). "Exclusive Horror Story From The Absolutely Chilling Through The Woods". io9. I reread this book because I reviewed and shared some of Emily Carroll's free short stories here for Halloween, and because I read Speak: The Graphic Novel, which she illustrated for Laurie Halse Anderson. Now, more than two years after I initially read it, I am feeling Carroll's groove. I wasn't as appreciative as I am now. I think she is one of the truly talented and smart and entertaining horror illustrators out there.
