Description

Gaming aside, this laptop is a breeze with everyday multitasking, browsing, or video streaming. The 0dB Technology implemented on this generation allows the two fans to completely switch off with light use on the Silent profile, as long as the hardware stays under 60 C, which is most of the time. And that’s both on battery or when plugged in. The fans are designed to only go to about 44-45 dB at head-level on Turbo, which means they only ramp up to about 75-80% of their max rpm on this mode, and that causes those high internal temperatures documented in the previous section. As for games i only tested Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, both on everything setting to maximum, i got some 120 fps average in Witcher 3 and 65 fps Cyberpunk ( no RT ) , with RT ultra i got 35 fps ,but enabling DLSS Quality got me a stable 50-55fps and no dowside in image quality as i can see. Both Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk after 1h of playing in turbo mode were under 80 degrees, both CPU and GPU I figured no games in my library and few I'm likely to play (not a mp/online shooter, BR/moba/esports fan) will ever push past 144Hz at high/ultra settings, even with a 3070. Besides I'm unsure if I could tell, seeing no difference between 120 and 144Hz previously.

Now, the Strix G17 and the Strix SCAR 17 are also different in a couple of other ways. There’s a standard rubber-dome keyboard on the G17, and not the mechanical keyboard from the Scar, and there’s also a difference in materials, audio, and RGB elements between the two. Everything else is rather similar, though, that’s why I was curious to see how this more affordable model compares to its higher-tier kin in terms of everyday feel, performance, and thermals.

Another thing is the Arrow key size. Once again, ASUS remains in the shadow of Lenovo and HP, with their respective Legion and Omen devices. AMD Radeon Vega + Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Laptop 8GB (115W, up to 130W with Dyn Boost, GeForce 461.23 drivers) By the way, the processor here has liquid metal between itself, and the cooling element, which greatly improves the thermal efficiency. However, the GPU uses an orthodox thermal paste, and we saw temperatures on the GPU that are a bit higher than optimal. Perhaps in the future, we might find a way to lower it through undervolting or applying liquid metal on the GPU, as well.

Inside we see a giant cooling solution, consisting of a total of six heat pipes of various sizes. One of them is common for the CPU and the GPU. There are two more for each processor, and one cooling the graphics memory and the VRM chips. The RGB on the G713 Mechanical Gaming Keyboard was amazing for someone who enjoys staying up late at night because the under-light provides a little extra light, in addition to each key and button being individually lit for maximum clarity in dark environments. I have noticed with other white variant keyboards that even though the body is visible with the glowing keys, the clarity of each key and the overall keyboard was dimmer. Even on the lower brightness, it is still clear without being intrusive to nearby roommates—making this the standout feature of this keyboard. Unlike the Scar 17 which is available with a couple of different screen options, the 2021 Strix G17 is only paired with a FHD 300 Hz panel, matte, and non-touch. Our test model is a mid-specced configuration of the ASUS ROG Strix G17, code name G713QR, built on an AMD Ryzen 7 5800H 8C/16T processor, 32 GB of DDR4 3200 MHz memory in dual channel, 1 TB of SSD storage, and dual graphics: the Nvidia RTX 3070 dGPU with 8 GB of vRAM and the AMD Vega iGPU integrated within the AMD processor.

FHD

One of the defining features for the G713 Mechanical Gaming Keyboard is the snappy Gaming Mode button. This means that while a user is gaming, some buttons will not do what it typically would do. For example, Alt+Tabbing out from a game by accident would not register with the default settings of Gaming Mode active. The Gaming Mode is active once it is lit up. The buttons that can be inactive when the Gaming Mode is on can be customized in the Logitech G Hub app. “…does the Logitech G713 Mechanical Gaming Keyboard live up to its hype? The answer is not so simple.” There’s a 90Wh battery inside all the 2021 ROG Strix models, both the 15 and 17-inch options, a welcomed upgrade from the 66 Wh in the previous generations. Higher-tier configurations with the Ryzen 9 5900HX processor are also available in some regions, while the lower-tier Strix G17 G713QM models with the Ryzen 7 processor and RTX 3060 Laptop 115W+ graphics should also make their way in stores in the near future. I’d keep a close eye on those QM variants, they might be even better valued than the QR model tested here, with the 3070. To get inside of this device, you need to undo 11 Phillips-head screws. The one on the top left corner will stay attached, and will gently lift the bottom panel from the chassis. Start your prying process from there and work your way around the device. Before you fully lift the panel away, make sure you disconnect the LED strip ribbon cables. Switching over to the Performance profile translates in the CPU running at 65W for a while and then stabilizing at 45W, with temperatures in the very low 70s and the fans spinning at ~40 dB at head-level.

In terms of upgradability, you get two RAM SODIMM slots, which fit 32GB of DDR4 memory, working at 3200 MHz. Keep in mind that this is the official capacity, stated by the manufacturer, and we are strongly positive that you can put up to 64GB in total. Additionally, there are two M.2 PCIe x4 slots for storage. Although we were not extremely happy to see mostly plastic on ROG Strix G17 G713’s chassis, it’s good that it isn’t a low-quality one, and the actual finish feels good. The Ryzen 7 processor stabilizes at 75+W of sustained power on the Turbo setting, which translates in frequencies of 3.8+ GHz, temperatures in the 86-90 C, scores of ~2100 points, and the fans spinning at about 44-45 dB at head-level. We’re not seeing any performance degradation on any sort of throttling for the entire duration of the test.

Update: If you’re interested in the updated Strix series with Ryzen 9 6900HX and RTX 3070Ti hardware, you’ll find that covered in this separate article. Nevertheless, we are yet to see what kind of performance improvements we’ll see and how exactly can we access the full power of the ROG Strix G17 G713.

Installing our Health-Guard profile not only eliminates PWM but also reduces the harmful Blue Light emissions while keeping the colors of the screen perceptually accurate. If you’re not familiar with the Blue light, the TL;DR version is – emissions that negatively affect your eyes, skin, and your whole body. You can find more information about that in our dedicated article on Blue Light. The maximum measured brightness is relatively high – 356 nits (cd/m2) in the middle of the screen and remains at the same 353 nits (cd/m2) average across the surface with a maximum deviation of 10%. The Correlated Color Temperature on a white screen and at maximum brightness is 6600K (average) – almost matching the 6500K optimum for sRGB.
