But time does heal this wound to their marriage, as Timoteo prays that time will heal his daughter. And the passion of yesteryear perhaps is the more glorious because, like a portrait, it does not age. And perhaps there is some solace in knowing that the love that one finds in a wife and a life's companion is different than that found in a fiery mania of long ago, but taken in total, no less deeply felt. Just to get an idea of her greatness in this movie, here are actor-director Sergio Castellitto's words at the press conference for the movie, which took place in Rome on March 9th:

Narratives associated to the Italian sentimental novel typically present quite discomforting themes: parental neglect, loveless relationships, addiction, rape, and the struggle for emancipation from obsolete but still pervasive regimes of power productive of an episteme of sentimental relations very hard to destabilize. Considered together, these works are indeed ‘sentimental,’ as far as they are concerned with the description and workings of human feelings, they are not, however, mawkish or superficial, as they investigate such feelings with courage and analytical precision. Be', ecco, lo ammetto: sono convinta di non aver capito molte cose di questo libro e, sicuramente, non avrò compreso nemmeno questa.

Penélope Cruz is astounding, realistic and yet heartbreaking, enormously moving, totally disappearing into her character, who's a poor, destitute, cheaply dressed and unkempt woman named Italia. She cleans hotel rooms for a living and lives herself in a slum, but has got the purest and noblest of souls ("She's a toad in a miniskirt who teaches the Prince how to love", in actor-director Castellitto's own words). L'iniziale lamento funebre per la vita della figlia che sta sfuggendo via si trasforma in una triste (tristissima) confessione - sempre alla suddetta figlia perché, nella narrazione, l'uomo si rivolge alla ragazza - in cui il padre rivela, tra le tante cose, la sua relazione clandestina (oltre che si è reso conto di non amare la madre della ragazza, d'aver sempre vissuto una vita che gli andava stretta, ect.). Don't Move (Non ti muovere)" is a European intellectual take on "Unfaithful" with issues of abuse, class, religion and regionalism replacing the Hollywood thriller aspect of the results of infidelity within an upper middle class marriage. E’ difficile per me dare un giudizio a questo libro che mi ha fatto provare emozioni forti e contrastanti.

Penélope Cruz, Sergio Castellitto, Claudia Gerini, Marco Giallini, Elena Perino, Pietro CastellittoE mentre leggo, scorgo qualche piega del precedente lettore, le classiche orecchie che io non farei mai, due, tre forse, a scandire il ritmo di un lettore, o i di una lettrice che ha letto in fretta come me, cento pagine alla volta, magari cento per giorno, in fretta come me, e che infine ha barattato la storia. Durante il viaggio Italia ha un'emorragia interna causata dall'aborto mal eseguito. Arrivati in un ospedale in costruzione, Timoteo aveva inutilmente tentato di salvarle la vita. La donna era morta durante la notte e un'agenzia di pompe funebri era stata incaricata da Timoteo di seppellirla nel suo paese. Non ti muovere sono le tre parole in preghiera che gli amanti si rivolgono quando rifuggono il mondo e vogliono egoisticamente avvilupparsi tra sé, e tutto il resto fuori. Ho comprato per 1€ la storia di Timoteo e Italia, munita del mio obolo sacrificale sono scesa nell’Inferno delle emozioni sature di un chirurgo in vista e della sua donna dei sobborghi che puzza di povero e che sa di amore.

Così, a volte, mi capita che mi trascino un libro per dei mesi, quando non diventano addirittura anni (non sto scherzando), prima di decidere che "ok, basta; non siamo fatti l'uno per l'altra". Of course, an existential path towards self-discovery and self-acceptance that seems to necessarily require, for its completion, the violent subjugation of others is a trope, however allegorically intended and received, that will remain poisonous to many readers. La storia entra fin nelle viscere. la puoi amare o odiare. Io l'ho odiata, anche se riconosco che la Mazzantini ha messo a nudo l'animo umano con tutte le sue sfacettature. L'ha fatto in modo crudo con termini desueti, all'inizio, che a me hanno dato fastidio. Sembrava un compitino del tipo " guardate quanti termini e sinonimi conosco", ma ad ogni modo non si può negare come sia stata capace di mostrare questo amore malato, logorante e allo stesso tempo pieno di vita e di passione, che devasta i cuori, le menti e la vita.however, just so the hero (and audience) can walk away with a clean conscience, in the parallel story, the hero's daughter survives. and so, like magic, you have a happy ending. morally despicable, yes. like a cheaply bought absolution for a medieval murder, it wreaks of a fundamental decadence of the soul. Of course, the issue of the redemption of Timo, as well as the “resolution of […] core issues” (Toscano 9) necessary to a positive resolution of the sentimental storyline do not apply to this text. Don’t Move is not a romance novel, but it represents an instance in which literary studies and romance studies could fruitfully dialogue to shed light on tropes that evidently do not only belong to a specific genre, but to a broader spectrum of literary imaginings and categories of thought. There are some unexpected auteur touches in Don't Move, sealed by Facing Windows cinematographer Gianfilippo Corticelli's inventive use of the widescreen format (events happening at the edges of the screen are sometimes used as ironic glosses on the main action). And there is some nice but never in-your-face play with symbols of faith, including crosses and bells.

Next morning, Timoteo offers to drive Italia down to her new town. During the journey, his feelings for Italia grow stronger and he confesses his desire to marry and settle down with her in the new town. While having dinner, Timoteo marries himself off to Italia and refers to her as "my wife" while speaking to a waitress. That night, he is woken by Italia's screams as she is gripped by unbearable pain in her abdomen. She is rushed to the local hospital, where an ultrasound reveals her belly to be full of blood, indicating a botched abortion. A desperate Timoteo then proceeds to operate on Italia. She dies soon after briefly regaining consciousness. La storia e i personaggi mi hanno preso, nonostante alcuni momenti di odio puro, in cui avrei voluto buttare il libro dalla finestra. Forse perché erano momenti troppo forti, e disturbanti, che mi hanno urtato, facendomi quindi odiare il libro. Forse non era il momento giusto per leggerlo, chi lo sa. Ma questa storia d'amore intensa, viscerale, da far male per me è stato troppo. Leggere i pensieri di quest’uomo, leggere le sue brutture, mi ha fatto torcere le budella. Non volevo immedesimarmi in lui. Per nulla. Però allo stesso tempo l’ho amato, e voi direte che sono matta, lo so, ma il bello è proprio questo turbinio di emozioni che si provano insieme al protagonista, talmente si è connessi con lui. Emozioni che lo portano a fare e dire cose che non avrebbe mai fatto, nel bene e nel male, e che personalmente mi hanno lacerato e fatto arrabbiare. The author of the book, who is married to the actor/director is probably the source of most of my criticism. A special feature with her comments did nothing to shed light on the story, just all praise for her husband's film, mainly in a lot of poetic language to do with the film's imagery. Any desire to read the book disappeared after that, although I wonder if perhaps some of the content is autobiographical stuff she doesn't quite understand and is trying to work out. Respected in his profession, married to a beautiful, cultured and understanding wife (Claudia Gerini, currently getting stateside exposure as Pontius Pilate's compassionate wife in The Passion Of The Christ), Timoteo is prey to dark dissatisfactions and wild urges which come to a head one hot summer's day when his car breaks down in a godforsaken, half-built outer suburb of Rome as he is driving down to his seaside house.
