Description

And Then I Woke Up is a terrifying and uncanny portrayal of how one’s perspective can be distorted and weaponized to split reality, causing untold harm to the masses, and forever damaging the individual. S. Capitol was a peaceful demonstration or an attempted coup, those differences of “opinion” can be crucial. Fans of Brian Keene, Adam Nevill, and Simon Strantzas will devour this apocalyptic pandemic tale, which will remind readers of a cross between Resident Evil and Fight Club.

A bold almost-allegory; a zombie novel that isn't; a foggy mirror held up to our own reality-- And Then I Woke Up is a painfully relevant story of narrative, of propaganda and perception, of the us-and-them divisions that wreak havoc and pain across society. Imagine you're minding your own business, washing dishes in the backroom of a restaurant and one of the waitresses rushes into the kitchen freaking out and asking how to lock the swinging doors.

It’s that some people have so much charisma, are so invested in their own beliefs in their own side, that they sway followers into their perception of what the “truth”, the true narrative, really is. We were directly referred to, as were they and their insights were welcomed as though we were all seated together and listening to this tale read aloud. But when the differing perspectives revolve around an issue of even middling importance, such as the size of the crowd at a particular presidential inauguration, or something larger and more fundamental, such as whether an ‘impromptu’ event in the U.

Those on one side see monsters in anyone who opposes them, and those on the other see sick people who can’t accept what seems like the truth of their circumstances or the way the world really works. And Then I Woke Up is a story about what happens when all truths are created equal, when every perspective on every issue is considered equally valid.

His first collection, ‘You Will Grow Into Them’ was published by Unsung Stories in 2017 and shortlisted for the British Fantasy and Saboteur Awards. That said, I did enjoy our narrator as a storyteller very much, so I suppose the book’s flaws are also its qualities, in a sense (can you see now why I’m struggling to rate and review this? In Devlin's ( You Will Grow Into Them) latest, the world is healing in the aftermath of a deadly mass delusion caused by an infection that induces hallucinations of zombies in its victims. Devlin has produced a novella that is both entertaining and has something to say about the state of the modern, media driven world. Malcolm Devlin’s (he/him) stories have appeared in Black Static, Interzone, The Shadow Booth, and Shadows and Tall Trees. I loved the writing style of the author, the plot was so unique to me, and I felt like the characters were pretty well developed in such a short amount of time. One of my favorite aspects is how Devlin plays with some more recognizable zombie horror tropes and blends them nearly seamlessly with psychological horror. It also reminded me quite a lot of a certain Black Mirror episode, but not enough that it felt like a copy – just both having the same beautifully creepy and sinister vibes. To the point where the concept of any objective truth is under attack by what one side considers to be the barbarians at the gate and vice versa. Horror is still a pretty new genre for me, and I get to have that exciting reading experience of working out what I do and don’t like in a certain genre. This is the idea behind Malcolm Devlin’s latest, a psychological horror story about a pandemic of sorts, where those who become infected turn into monsters and start eating people.

And Then I Woke Up feels like a difficult title to rate and review, because it was a difficult title to form a solid opinion on. Malcolm Devlin gives us a chance to answer that question as we dive head first into his novella ‘And Then I Woke up. The book is full of action and just as full of plot holes, including scenes that are illogical or disconnected from the main narrative. Elements of this fable will surely resonate with contemporary readers living in a world where “alternative” facts and competing narratives have driven people to violence and death, and a virus is just one of the natural, social, political, and cultural upheavals that have polarized the population and led them to perceive those on the other side of the divide as monsters or idiots. But then again, had it been longer it might have moved more into the typical action/adventure plot line and lost the creepiness of just getting a snapshot into this world and scenario. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. and then he wakes up, pays the inventor half his wealth which is a tin of beans and a broken watch and wanders out into the remnants of the devasted world and works his way across the blasted landscape.
