Nose: quite full with lots of fresh oak and nutty malt accents. Seems they did a good job maturing the stuff, as the aroma displays the sort of richness you only get from combining different cask types. I liked it right off the bat. Singleton of Dufftown 12 Year Old Speyside Single Malt Scotch

Full disclosure: This sample was included in an advent calendar which I was sent for free. As always, I will strive to give an honest opinion on the quality of the dram and the value for money it represents. There are hardly any official bottlings. Besides this 12 Year Old, there is also a Singleton of Dufftown 15 Year Old.

Whisky reviews for The Singleton of Dufftown 12-year-old

Dufftown is the name of a town in the Speyside region of the Scottish Highlands. The town itself is home to a number of distilleries including Balvenie, Glenfiddich, Mortlach, and others. This means that the name of this particular bottle could be translated as “a single malt made in a town where a lot of other single malts are also made”. I guess that doesn’t ring enough to make the Diageo marketing materials. Dufftown is, in fact, a small distillery in the town of Dufftown, with the official name of “Dufftown-Glenlivet Distillery” which does nothing to alleviate the confusion (it refers to the valley – glen – of the river Livet, not the Glenlivet Distillery). The Diageo-owned distillery has six stills and was established in the 1890s. The range includes a number of NAS malts, as well as a 15-year, 18-year, 21-year, and 25-year. This 12-year is aged in a combination of ex-bourbon and “European oak” casks, which could mean a lot of different things. It’s bottled at 40% ABV. Well... some 6 years later I still have about a quarter of the bottle left. After a few trials and errors I found the best recipe to utilise this whisky - Marie-Helene's apple cake: It is like that person you are introduced to (usually at work) who’s name instantly does out of your head and you’ve totally forgotten five seconds after they’ve walked away or left the room. Thoughts: It’s perhaps not the most complex whisky I’ve ever come across but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I had a similar reaction when I first came across Cragganmore. I expected a delicate dram in the style of Glenlivet but found something more robust, instead. As much as people sometimes like to portray Diageo as the Evil Empire, they really know what they’re doing when it comes to bottling single malt Scotch whisky. This is a Speyside I can get on board with. Fully flavoured and very satisfying. Each and every Member must be of legal drinking age in its country of residence to be allowed to use the Service. I find myself drinking more and more just to get that second or two of pleasure in the finish, but the roughness/wood-shaving aspect of the palate is drying my mouth and making it harder to enjoy that fleeting sweetness. Nose: Bubble gum. Dense fruit punch aromas, Red Vines, and a hint of anise. A rest in the glass neither adds nor removes anything from the equation. Finish: Quite long but that’s not a good thing as again a great void of nothing overwhelms you. I was immediately opening my cabinet to find something more interesting (not difficult) to replace it with.Thin, delicate and oily, the whisky floats in the mouth and tingles a little on the tongue. The fruitiness is pronounced here, as well. The apple in particular stands out. Orange toffee, roasted nuts and brown sugar round off the less complex but quaffable single malt. Every now and then, the alcohol bites a little, despite the low 40% abv. Finish The town housed seven distilleries at one time. Such density of distillation inspired the slogan “Rome was built on seven hills but Dufftown stands on seven stills”. The seven were Mortlach, Glenfiddich, Balvenie, Convalmore, Parkmore, Glendullan and Dufftown itself. The Singleton name was first applied to the single malt from Auchroisk in 1986 after the distillery was deemed too difficult to pronounce. When Auchroisk was later added to Diageo’s Flora & Fauna series, however, “The Singleton” was dropped. Palate: medium to full bodied and quite cloying. In a sense I want to describe it as rich but I'm reminded of a cut-price supermarket dessert which has chemicals and compounds added to simulate richness. It feels smooth and full bodied but in an overly engineered and synthetic way. It's as though the brief was to come up with something deep, rich, smooth and easy drinking. The results are successful but ultimately rather unsatisfying. This feels forced. I'm not enjoying it one bit. About that Singelton-range, by the way, this Dufftown is the follow up expression after the demise of the Singleton of Auchroisk. The only other expressions in a Singelton bottle are those of Glen Ord and Glendullan.

The Dufftown range includes 12, 15 and 18-year-old expressions and there have been various no-age-statement releases including Tailfire and Spey Cascade. The sweet and fruity notes in this fine malt from Dufftown, at the heart of Speyside, are the product of traditional, slow distilling, using pure water from Highlandman John's Well. Long maturation in a unique balance of European and American Oak then gives The Singleton of Dufftown its smooth, richly satisfying taste. The unique bottle shape of bottle is inspired by a traditional hipflask while the colour of the glass reflects the blue flint glass used at the turn of the previous century. I like the bottle! What I find curious about this expression is that I can't find much objectively wrong with it - it is, after all, inexpensive and, from the marketing and advertising, I deduce it's aimed at new whisky drinkers - but somehow for very subjective reasons I really don't like it. Review time: a glossy amber pour with those oily streaks some whiskies have that make things appear has though you were on a very hot summer day when you look through your dram, you know what I mean? Like blurry and wavy. It usually means velvety textures, so I like it.I’m no expert, but I enjoy the character of single malts. Not everyone likes the flavour of every single malt, but they all have a distinct personality or they are not single malt.

My general feeling of this dram was one of being totally under whelmed. I am struggling, even as a novice, to come up with any flavours or smells to describe. It’s as if the makers were simply intending to make the stuff taste ‘whisky flavoured’. There was very little at all in the way of fruit, sweetness, bitterness, finesse, wow factor or even dislike. The whisky was just uninspiring, none descript and dull. I have read and been told that adding water to whisky is intended to open up the flavours, well I’m afraid it didn’t work in this case.
