Peyton Placeis set in a small New England town where everyone knows everyone’s business. The inhabitants of Peyton Place seemed to have a lot more sex than other novels of the mid-fifties – more than the censors and many critics were prepared to put up with: the novel was banned in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1957 and in Rhode Island in 1959. a b c Lent, Robin (2002). "Grace Metalious". St. James Encyclopedia of Pop Culture . Retrieved August 7, 2008. For Grace, writing was like breathing; she needed to do it to stay alive. For his part, her husband resented her need to write and blatant nonconformity.

The Peyton Place Murder" was a two-sitting reading for me - and equal parts breezy and compelling. I love a book where the writing bobs you swiftly along, yet you feel like you're taking time to examine cherished, chosen details about peoples' lives. It is a book that deserves a high profile, an excellent read that I genuinely enjoyed, and a must for students of popular culture, popular literature, and true crime. I will be recommending it to others. Born Marie Grace DeRepentigny in Manchester, New Hampshire, on September 8, 1924, Grace was the daughter of Alfred and Laurette, both of whom were of French Canadian descent. Scholars and biographers alike allege that she was raised Franco-American, and that the primary language in her home growing up was French. But if you had asked Laurette, she would have never admitted to being French Canadian — prone to embellishments, a trait her daughter would surely inherit, Laurette was adamant that her family came from France. Indeed, at the time of Grace’s birth, Manchester was a segregated city: the west side was dubbed Petit Canada, the east was mainly populated by Irish and Greek immigrants, while the north was reserved for the homegrown Yankees who liked to look down on the supposed foreigners invading their land. As a result, Laurette wanted nothing to do with Petit Canada — thus her insistence and delusions of being from France. Metalious was born Grace de Repentigny on Sept. 8, 1924, to poor Franco-American parents in Manchester, N.H. Her father, a merchant seaman, left the family when she was 10. Anyone, she declared to herself, would be impressed with a man that size, with his almost revolting good looks and that smile that belongs in a bedroom.

More about Grace Metalious

Other storylines follow Leslie Harrington, owner of the local woolen mills, whose son Rodney dies in a car accident, as well as newspaper man Seth Buswell. Peyton Place eventually sold over 12 million copies but even then is most widely remembered for its film and TV adaptations. ” AP: "50 Years Later, Peyton Memories Remain" ". I did not like being regarded as a freak because I spent time in front of a typewriter instead of a sink. And George did not like my not liking the things I was supposed to like.” After George returned home from the military he had an affair; Grace retaliated with an affair of her own. A daytime soap opera titled Return to Peyton Place ran from 1972 to 1974, and the franchise had two made-for-television movies: Murder in Peyton Place and Peyton Place: The Next Generation in 1977 and 1985 respectively.

Peyton Place, The Book

Norman’s mother, Evelyn, becomes convinced that Allison and Norman have slept together. It isn’t true, but Constance and Evelyn force the two to confess, and they are punished. Allison slaps her mother and her mother, angered, tells her the truth about Allison’s father, calling her a bastard. Allison is upset and angry; after so many years of fantasizing about her father, the truth is devastating. Allison runs to her room and, discovering the body of Nellie Cross in her closet, screams. Nellie had found out that Lucas impregnated Selena; horrified and broken by this news, she killed herself. The suicide and the reason for it affect Constance powerfully, and she is consumed by worry that a similar fate will fall on Allison. I don't mean to cause any offense to people who grew up in the fifties, but in a way I'm glad that I didn't come of age then. It seems hard to understand the criticisms that were thrown at this book in that time. I agree with the author when she said "to talk about adults without talking about their sex drives is like talking about a window without glass."
