The app allows us to swipe through potential matches that we may never have crossed paths with, who are essentially complete strangers.

However, problems arise when individuals try to learn about all of their options at the same time that they are making their choices (as maximizers do). Autonomy and freedom of choice are critical to our well being, and choice is critical to freedom and autonomy. We are not only susceptible to choice overload by being consumers, major life decisions, such as our choice of career and our choice of romantic partner, are also subject to its effects. If you feel you have not been offered a choice, you should speak to the person who is referring you in the first instance. Indeed, in some domains in Japan and China, having more options than desired wasn’t negatively related to satisfaction, and might therefore not really be “overload” at all, whereas overload reliably predicted dissatisfaction in the other countries. S., for example, having too few doctors to choose from could make you six times less satisfied than having too many. Kahneman and Tversky found that personal "psychological accounts" will produce the effect of framing the choice and determining what options are considered as subjects to factor.

As we get older, we become more susceptible to choice overload, which can in turn make us more vulnerable to fraud. With discipline and planning, the decision-making process can be tweaked and we can avoid feeling overwhelmed.

When we don’t have the cognitive resources to weigh our options, we can end up simply abandoning the effort of making a choice. We care deeply about our users and work hard to exclude unsuitable videos, but no automated system of filters is perfect. On the flip side, preference uncertainty fuels choice overload: not knowing exactly what we are looking for.

Although it can be unpleasant to have too many options, it is often much more harmful to have too few—especially when the number of options is not enough to meet people’s basic needs. Barry Schwartz, the father of the paradox of choice, acknowledges that these controversial findings are likely apparent. How do you pick one person to date when there are so many other options out there that might be better? I have discussed with my GP or healthcare professional the different options available to me, including the pros and cons and, where appropriate, whether to choose to not have treatment. More choices lead to more cognitive dissonance because it increases the chance that the decision-maker made the wrong decision.

An interesting finding from the jam study, is that of the people who bought a jar of jam, those who purchased from the smaller stall were much more satisifed. Choice overload: the tendency for people to get overwhelmed when they are presented with a large number of options, often used interchangeably with the term paradox of choice. Choice overload makes it harder for us to make decisions, and it can make us feel so overwhelmed that we just give up, putting off the choice until later. The study that initially sparked Barry Schwartz interest in the matter was conducted by Sheena Iyengar and Mark Lepper, who are also important figures in behavioral science, in 2001.
