Description

Once you’re under the kayak skirt and you’re paddling, the rain was fine. We stayed warm and your legs stay dry under the skirt. The only issue was you couldn’t always see much so you’ve got to have sharp eyes to stay safe and on the right trajectory. Best Places to Visit in Desolation Sound Kayak Camping

The novel The Lost Flying Boat by Alan Sillitoe is situated around Kerguelen, though the islands' geography are not accurately described. Waugh, Charles; Asimov, Isaac; Greenberg, Martin Harry, eds. (1981). Isaac Asimov Presents the Best Science Fiction of the 19th Century. Beaufort Books. p.113. ISBN 9780825300387.The main island, Grande Terre, is of volcanic origin. About 150 km (93 mi.) long east-to-west and 120 km (75 mi.) north-to-south, it is the third largest island belonging to France (after Grande Terre in New Caledonia, and Corsica). Covering an area of 6,675 km² (2,577 mi²), it has a highly irregular coastline with a number of large peninsulas linked to the island by low, narrow isthmuses. These large features are further sub-divided by fjords into smaller peninsulas. Remarkably, despite its total area, no point on the main island is more than 20 km (12 mi.) from the sea.

Origins of the Kerguelen Plateau

Now east of the Cape, the Leopard aims for New South Wales, but soon strikes an iceberg, damaging the rudder and causing a severe leak. All hands pump, and the seamen work to fother a sail to stop the leak. Aubrey was wounded in the battle but maintains his authority. Grant, who is more comfortable as captain, disagrees that the Leopard will float, and is given permission to take the Leopard's boats and the men who wish to leave and head for the Cape. Only the Jolly boat is left behind with the ship. The Leopard drifts east with the wind, still rudderless, pumping all the time. Aubrey, making adroit use of anchors and sails, directs the ship to safe harbour in a bay of Desolation Island. Despite its name, it is full of fresh food in the rainy Antarctic summer. Rev Mr Fisher - chaplain on the Leopard, proves of no help in the epidemic, and proves self-centered as the challenges of the voyage continue.

Moore - Marine Captain on Leopard, good at gunnery, aimed the shot that hit the foremast of the Dutch 74. The highest point is Mont Ross in the Gallieni Massif, which rises along the southern coast of the island and has an elevation of 1,850 metres (6,070ft). The Cook Ice Cap ( French: Calotte Glaciaire Cook), [19] France's largest glacier with an area of about 403km 2 (156sqmi), lies on the west-central part of the island. Overall, the glaciers of the Kerguelen Islands cover just over 500km 2 (190sqmi). Grande Terre has also numerous bays, inlets, fjords, and coves, as well as several peninsulas and promontories. The most important ones are listed below: Every three months a ferry leaves from the island of Réunion (in itself already difficult to reach since there is no airport) and then it takes six days of crossing the sea to finally spot land. Today the island of Kerguelen is inhabited by about a hundred scientists and meteorologists who, in rotation, work in the technical and scientific station of Port-aux-Français, built in 1950.

Topographic Features

We were kayaking around during the day just to take in the views and they came up to us to tell us we couldn’t camp in a bay when we were just watching the seals while bobbing about on the water.

When it comes to Desolation Sound water temperature, it’s renowned for its warm summer ocean temperatures, which can reach up to 24 degrees celsius in August! The real secret of Desolation, says Captain Colin Griffinson, owner-operator of classic 1943 expedition yacht Pacific Yellowfin,is to come in the quiet months if you want to see wilderness and wildlife. “My ideal times are September into October, and May through early July. We have one of the biggest bald eagle shows in the world then and nobody knows about it.”
