Like all LG TVs, the C2 ships in the Eco mode, and this mode really pushes blue in the whites and is wildly over-saturated compared to the industry standards. We stuck on an episode of Louis Theroux’s Weird Weekends on BBC iPlayer, and we were impressed by the amount of detail that still came through. LG says this is possible thanks to its α9 Gen 5 AI processor, and it’s the only TV manufacturer to offer it at the time of review. That’s not an issue if you want a really naturalistic viewing experience, but for really seamless cinematic viewing, you’ll need to use Cinema or HDR Cinema Home.

The SDR and HDR performance is exceptional, and while not quite as bright as the higher-end G2, it still benefits from the same AI-enhanced processing. The unbelievably slim design 4 fits seamlessly into your home with the stylish Gallery Stand and Floor Stand. These differences are most pronounced in the Dolby Vision Bright mode, which is the one to use if there’s ambient light in the room or if you simply appreciate the punchier approach (which we do), but the C2 is also the better TV when the even truer Dolby Vision Dark preset is selected, maintaining the authenticity of the image while revealing more shadow detail and providing brighter highlights. The 65-inch C1 from last year measured 690 nits at 10% and 139 nits at 100%, so there is an improvement with this new 2022 Evo panel. As such, all picture enhancements, such as sharpness, noise reduction, and motion interpolation, are disabled, with the mode following the same industry standards used in content creation.

The LG C2, like all LG OLED sets, has a full suite of calibration controls available within the menu system as well as being able to use the Calman AutoCal system. The same is true with all other brightness levels through the greyscale as it remains clean all the way up to 100%. Unfortunately, this main hub wasn’t working properly for me, so I couldn’t access recent/background apps. In terms of general performance, the C2 is an impressive 4K OLED TV that demonstrates all the usual benefits, from sharp and detailed pixel-precise images to the deep blacks and excellent shadow detail.If you’re not interested in using a soundbar at all, you could opt for one of LG’s rather attractive minimalist stands; the C2 OLED works with both the Gallery Stand and the Floor Stand, which are cool options for anyone who doesn’t want a regular TV cabinet. The Magic remote carries over from 2021 and feels less fiddly to use, the cursor less prone to flying across the screen.

Alternatively, there’s the Panasonic LZ980 with a choice of screen sizes ranging from 42in to 65in, and last year’s Philips 806, which comes in 48in to 77in screen sizes. As before, the pleasingly rich overall character remains consistent from last year’s G1, but there’s more punch and pop to the new model’s performance. Anyone particularly susceptible to the effects of motion smoothing on film-based content will want to turn TruMotion off (or select Filmmaker Mode), but others will enjoy experimenting with the different settings. LG has made changes over the previous model and they’re all for the better, with everything I felt needed attention addressed. You also have Cinema, Game Optimization, and Standard listening modes to choose from, so you should be able to find an audio profile you like.There’s also support for G-Sync, FreeSync and regular VRR, plus an upgrade to the game bar, which you’ll enjoy if you ever connect your PC to your TV.
