I think this was a good book for me to write a review on as I really enjoy reading war books; I have about 10 of them. I will definitely be looking out for more of Emma Carroll's books. In the second section, “Time Passes,” 10 years have gone by, and Mrs. Ramsay and a few of her children have died. World War I has happened and the house has fallen into neglect without the family's annual visits.

Then he wondered if maybe life itself was like that: you focused on one big thing and missed the small things that could prove to be just as essential. At other times you focused on small things and missed the big ones.” In P. D. James’s novels, the setting is usually of great importance in creating a mood as well as in providing plot details. What mood does the setting of Combe Island provide in The Lighthouse? Does the island provide, eventually, a healing and restorative function for various characters? For the three highly stressed detectives of the story, what are the positive and negative effects of their stay on Combe? Everything is nicely set up for an intriguing mystery, and sure enough the second half includes a secondary murder, and from then on escalates into a gripping drama. A long-forgotten mystery from history, a tale of betrayal and deep resentment, reveals the reasons for what happened. To pile on the suspense, one of the officers falls gravely ill, in itself a life-threatening risk in such a remote location. This character is unable to complete the work, although they are working out the puzzle in their mind. Another excels in a situation they have not experienced before. There is an extremely tense and exciting edge-of-the-seat scene towards the end, cleverly written by this experienced author. And we have a happy ending of an unexpected type. stars Thanks to BookBrowse and Beacon Press Limited for allowing me to read and review this ARC. Publishes October 26, 2021 I'm truly sorry that this book didn't work for me, but try as much, I couldn't get into the book. It had a promising beginning, of course, and I was hoping for another interesting journey with it, but, when the crime is committed and the investigation began, it turned tedious and boring until the final chapters when the criminal is revealed, and there was some action in apprehending him.The midsection of the book is devoted to fantasy/magic realism of sorts with a new theory thrown in. The setting of the story was described quite nicely, and reading this book felt like a very vivid journey into Seabrook, and I was left feeling truly immersed in the atmosphere of the world. I could vividly imagine the town square, the hotel, the ranch, the beach and the lighthouse, and it was a very cozy atmosphere. When I think of Seabrook, I get a pleasant and nostalgic feeling, and it is a town I would like to re-explore one day. Asta era cel mai inspaimantator lucru cand venea vorba de dragoste; avea senzatia ca-i inmanase cheia spre mintea lui si ca acum Miranda putea sa intre acolo oricand dorea."

Distraught at the state of Amy’s health, Kevin undertakes a missing person’s case in the distant town of Seabrook in the hopes that a change in scenery may lift Amy’s spirits, and hopefully bring he and Amy closer. Begrudgingly, Amy agrees to tag along on her dad’s assignment. Because anything was better than staying at home alone.

P. D. James is the author of nineteen books, most of which have been filmed and broadcast on television in the United States and other countries. She spent thirty years in various departments of the British Civil Service, including the Police and Criminal Law Departments of Great Britain’s Home Office. She has served as a magistrate and as The Ramsays' youngest child, James, loves his mother and hates his father. The novel begins when James asks if they can go to see the lighthouse near their summer home, but his father refuses because the weather will be too bad. At the end of the novel, ten years after the initial request, Mr. Ramsay takes a reluctant James and his sister, Cam, to the lighthouse. Charles Tansley The town is alive with curiosity, bringing everyone out to see it. Amy meets Ryan, a local owner of a horse farm, and an immediate connection forms. Ryan is not only trying to save the family farm, which has been in the family for generations, but is also trying to save his father from dying of cancer. Amy, who is visiting for the weekend, is trying to overcome the grief of having just lost her mother. They accidentally meet, in a most unusual manner.

Dalgliesh, James’s master detective who rises from chief inspector in the first novel to chief superintendent and then to commander, is a serious, introspective person, moralistic yet realistic. The novels in which he appears are peopled by fully rounded characters, who are civilized, genteel, and motivated. The public resonance created by James’s singular characterization and deployment of classic mystery devices led to most of the novels featuring Dalgliesh being filmed for television. James, who earned the sobriquet “Queen of Crime,” penned 14 Dalgliesh novels, with the last, The Private Patient, appearing in 2008. I think that the plot was reasonable but that this book could have been written better than it was. I would personally recommend this story a 4 out of 5. The illustrations just let me feel a bit disappointed but overall the plot was enthralling with an original storyline. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Braden Wright. His voice is deep, he reads beautifully and his voicing of male characters is engaging. It has been my experience when a male narrator is voicing female characters, it doesn't translate well to the listener. It detracts the listener, while the addition of a female narrator would not.The characters are likeable and there is a bit of intrigue in all of them until the story unfolds toward and unforgetable ending. The Lighthouse is a moving novel that will take your breath away, leave you sobbing and wanting it to never end. Five touching stars.
