The images, from Brian’s personal archives, were taken using the various stereo cameras which Brian carried throughout his life. These people were actually using their art to say things like that," May says, "to undercut the ruling class, particularly Napoleon III, whom they obviously hated.

Stereoscopy turned out to be a “rollercoaster ride with peaks and periods of total oblivion and neglect”, he added. May and Pellerin are also giving a talk hosted by the British Library and King’s College London on Wednesday. There's a real nice spot [in the show] there it's set up for a guitar hero, so for a moment I can be a guitar hero," he said. People had a stereoscope and a stack of cards on the parlour table, and when friends came they would look at stereos. It is not just a collection of photographs of nature, people, pets, architecture, and more, but a tangible, dimensional assemblage that speaks to the evocative power of stereoscopic photography. In fact, the book had already gone to press by the time of the Ukraine invasion, but we wondered if we should have taken them out. Among the images in the book is a stereoscopic portrait of Dickens taken moments before he began reading extracts from his Christmas stories to an audience in 1858, and another of the author writing at his desk. SIGFY comes with an OWL Stereoscopic Viewer, designed by Brian, that does the job of transforming the stereoscopic pairs of images into magical in-depth 3-D. The whole of the LSC is only about six people, and five of us were involved in the book,’ he explains, ‘so it wasn’t a big team but it was a very hard-working one.

If phone makers can put three cameras on here (he holds up his iPhone) it would be dead easy for them to put lenses one across the other. As for May, his musical solo efforts are concentrated on working with British singer Kerry Ellis, who had appeared in the "We Will Rock You" musical. For Brian May, a 10-year-old boy who would grow up to become a rock superstar with Queen, it resulted in a lifelong fascination with stereoscopy. Another revival came in the 1980s, and in 2009 “we had [the film] Avatar and every TV set you bought was 3D-ready.This is a very nice app and is very cheap, considering the developer, Masuji Suto, updates it for free. Then downstairs is Queen in 3-D, encompassing not just being with Queen on and off the road, but my history with 3-D. A lot of people go through almost their whole lives without realising they have this wonderful depth of perception. And that's what I enjoy: the writing, the production and the arrangement, but working with a singer. And it’s produced from these two slightly different images, which your eyes are capturing every second.

This is a unique display, inviting visitors to delve into the magic of stereoscopy from the Victorian era to the present, culminating with a captivating display of images from the modern-day stereo community.Through his personal Instagram and the LSC’s social media platforms, Brian invited stereoscopists everywhere to capture and share images of living under lockdown and beyond.
