Description

She visits the hospital ER so often in an elevated state of anxiety or with some minor injury that the workers all know her by name. This hilarious and profound debut for fans of Mostly Dead Things and Goodbye, Vitamin, follows a morbidly anxious young woman—“the kindhearted heroine we all need right now” (Courtney Maum, New York Times bestselling author)—who stumbles into a job as a receptionist at a Catholic church and becomes obsessed with her predecessor’s mysterious death.

She can't remember when she has showered and she loses her latest job because she forgets to go to work.I felt like Austin put a lot of effort into making the prose and the protagonist “quirky,” instead of fleshing the protagonist out more deeply.

Not the new favorite I was hoping it might be, but the ending really brought it around for me and I ended up enjoying this much more because of it.

This story is told in the first person by Gilda, a gay 27-year-old atheist with depression and anxiety. It is that but it’s also a very deep, disturbing look into the mind of a young woman who is deeply depressed. Emily Austin's narration is so fundamentally kind that you can feel the warmth coming off each page . Everyone In This Room Will Someday Be Dead redefines bravery, giving comfort to those who, like Gilda, struggle mightily with big hearts in a world that, to paraphrase the great Margaret Atwood, is full of bastards trying to get you down. I found this portrayal an honest one, and while it may have been hard to read at times, it tackles some meaty issues surrounding mental health.
