At the beginning I was bored then I was excited and these feelings were changing over and over again. bestselling author Victoria Schwab delivers a thrillingly spooky and action-packed tale of hauntings, history, mystery, and the bond between friends (even if that friend is a ghost.

Ever since Cass almost drowned (okay, she did drown, but she doesn't like to think about it), she can pull back the Veil that separates the living from the dead. I also enjoyed that Cass can actually see ghosts, and interact with them, even though no one else in her family can. As Cass travels the world with her TV host parents, they visit some of the world’s most haunted places - Edinburgh, Paris, New Orleans - and Cass is immersed in the City of Ghosts and all its dangers. I don’t know if her only middle grade book is the best way to start with her books, but I picked this from a shelf at my library and decided to go for it. As it becomes apparent that the hideous discovery that opens the book, may be in some way related to his previous life, Creed really puts Rossel through the emotional wringer, but never losing sight of the qualities that some of his colleagues regard as ineffectual imbue Rossel with a strength and decency that proves so valuable in this extremely testing investigation.I don’t know whether that has to do with the fact that this is a middle grade story or that I didn’t feel the excitement and thrill I’ve come to expect of Schwab’s stories. If you are an adult reading this don’t expect it to be the next A darker shade of magic because it is not and nor it is supposed to be so. And when her parents host a TV show about the wolrd most haunted places, they end up going to Edinburgh.

Trigger and content warnings for death, especially the death of children, murder, loss of a child, and abduction. So why only four stars well whilst music plays a significant part of the story, and I am afraid quite a lot of the in depth musical explanations went straight over my head and bored me. With a flurry of flashbacks and glimpses into his past as an aspiring and talented musician, we again bear witness to the power of the state to suppress its citizens, crushing their hopes and dreams and wreaking violence and fear amongst them.I don’t read many historical fiction books because I find myself a bit lost in that time as I wasn’t a big fan of history in my school time but I was born and raised in an easter European country and the setting for this story is very close from home, and the description made me want to give it a try and read it. Because even though there didn’t happen a lot in this rather short fantasy book the writing style still kept me going and caused me to read on. The dialogue and every interaction from the story are so reliable for those times, they all were so wary about everything and everyone as you couldn’t trust anyone, you didn’t know if a family member or friend was your ally or your enemies. So we pile into the cab, two parents, one kid, a ghost, and a ticked-off cat, and we head for the airport. The strength of this book is in the writing, which has an immersive scene-setting similar to Cruz Smith at his early best.
