The very first thing the Doctor used this incredible tool for was literally unscrewing some screws – although it soon turned out to have far greater capabilities, thanks to the powerful, miniaturised technology it contained. the second doctor and his first sonic screwdriver.

The Doctor mentioned that he does not give his screwdriver to anyone. In the following episode, Professor Song mentions that her screwdriver is augmented with a "red setting" and "dampers". It also contains a hidden neural relay linked to River Song, saving her at the episode's conclusion—the purpose for which the future Doctor gave Professor Song the device. A toy version is available. The sonic screwdriver also affected alive beings: the Third Doctor used it to cure Henry VIII of his cataracts, ( PROSE: Hiccup in Time) distract giant maggots, ( TV: The Green Death) break a hypnotic trance ( TV: Death to the Daleks) and overload the brains of Space Greyhounds. ( COMIC: The Forgotten) After spending a period of time using a combination of sonic sunglasses and his green-emitter sonic screwdriver, ( COMIC: Clara Oswald and the School of Death) the Twelfth Doctor was gifted a new model by the TARDIS.
