Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana Ellwoodii Gold (Lawson’s Cypress) has highly attractive & eye-catching foliage – its light green leaves, particularly the new growth in spring are tipped with golden yellow, giving it golden hue. This is particularly spectacular as the normally green pom poms turn to gold. Evergreen refers to plants that hold onto their leaves or needles for more than one growing season, shedding them over time. Some plants such as live oaks are evergreen, but commonly shed the majority of their older leaves around the end of January. Moist and well drained means exactly what it sounds like. Soil is moist without being soggy because the texture of the soil allows excess moisture to drain away. Most plants like about 1 inch of water per week. Amending your soil with compost will help improve texture and water holding or draining capacity. A 3 inch layer of mulch will help to maintain soil moisture and studies have shown that mulched plants grow faster than non-mulched plants. Dwarf conifers are not actually dwarf, but are just slower growing. They will eventually become larger and could outgrow their space. This is fairly common with most conifers as they grow, and they can be replaced when it happens. However, their size can be controlled to some extent by pruning and trimming them. Young plants need extra phosphorus to encourage good root development. Look for a fertilizer that has phosphorus, P, in it(the second number on the bag.) Apply recommended amount for plant per label directions in the soil at time of planting or at least during the first growing season. No gardener depends 100% on natural rainfall. Even the most water conscious garden appreciates the proper hose, watering can or wand. Conifers also need decent draining, so do not plant them in very heavy clay soil or else you will risk drowning the plant. Sprinklers: Attached to the ends of garden hoses, these act as an economical irrigation system. Standing Spike Sprinklers are usually intended for lawns and deliver water in a circular pattern. Rotating Sprinklers deliver a circle of water and are perfect for lawns, shrubs and flower beds. Pulse-jet sprinklers cover large areas of ground in a pulsating, circular pattern. The head usually sits up on a tall stem, except for when watering lawns. Oscillating sprinklers are best for watering at ground level in a rectangular pattern. Newly planted conifers need very careful watering during the initial stages. They are drought proof once established and should not need too much watering, but they are very vulnerable to stress from drought if they are not watered thoroughly. Highly decorative, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Ellwoodii’ (Lawson Cypress) is an upright, evergreen shrub of dense columnar habit with short sprays of soft feathery, silver-blue foliage, turning steel-blue in winter. Slow-growing, 1-6 in. (2.5-15 cm) per year. Very versatile, it is a popular choice in a number of gardens. Adding year-round structure, it makes a wonderful specimen plant, adds vertical accent lines to the landscape, and is perfect for hedges and screens.

Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana is commonly known as Lawson’s Cypress and is a family of evergreen conifers native to the Western USA, from the coast up to an altitude of almost 2,000 metres. As conifers, Lawson’s Cypress are very useful, thriving in oceanic climates and well able to withstand strong winds. They are a good choice ofornamental coniferand as a hedging screen in more exposed areas. First introduced in the UK in 1850, when seeds were sent to a nurseryman Peter Lawson in Scotland. Today, there are over 450 cultivars. At around 1 metre tall, these multi-stemmed Chamaecyparis topiary pom pom trees offer great value for money. Commonly known as Elwood's Gold, False Cypress and Lawson's Cypress. This is a medium to large shrub but it has a slow-growing habit: in a period of 10 years, Lawson’s Cypress Ellwoodii will achieve a height of up to 1.5 metres, with an eventual maximum height of 6 metres. Our pot grown Chamaecyparis Ellwood’s Gold can be planted at any time of the year. Firstly, remove weeds and grass within a metre of your desired planting hole, then dig a square hole as deep as your root mass and approximately 2x as wide. To help Ellwood’s Gold establish more effectively, we advise applying Mycorrhizal fungi (sprinkle in the hole for pot grown trees), especially if you have poor soil.Yes, When growing in containers need to keep the plants small, start with pot that will be potted in 20% more than the root ball, every time that the tree arrive to full capacity need to switch to bigger until arrives to desirable size, better to use this method because the soil lose the viability over time and it’s efficient of care for the tree, when the plant big need to switch part of the soil, drainage it’s important and need to make holes and to use peat soil and maybe some lava grit or just to use potting mix and, put a bottom for the container and when water the plant let it fill the bottom but also need to dry in the same day, if not mean that there too much water Blooming information Multi Stem tree: Two or more stems arising from or near ground level, growing from one root system. Chamaecyparis (sometimes referred to as False Cypress) is often used for topiary or the Japanese art of Niwaki (nurturing trees to grow into a particular shape). This is a slow-growing conifer with a naturally compact and dense shape. Despite their striking looks, these topiary pom pom trees are low maintenance, needing a trim at most twice per year. Top grafted tree: A height next to this form refers to the length of clear stem, which will not grow taller. Only the head of branches will develop. Ideal for small spaces. Climber: Naturally climbing plant. Usually delivered running up a cane, ready to position in the garden.

Since the pruning has been performed in the winter there will be new growth in the next few months. Most conifers are fully hardy and can be planted outdoors however; a few are frost tender such as Araucaria cunninghamii and should be grown with protection over winter. When to plant
