Moreover, Sera is absolutely fantastic. She is even more amazing than before. The strength she has is unreal. What she goes through is devastating, yet she is determined to see her plan through. I was so touched by her resilience and determination, and her will to protect those she loves no matter the cost, no matter what happens to her. Equally so, Nyktos is as wonderful as ever. He may not appear as often as I would have liked, at least in the first part of the book, but every moment with him in it is pure bliss. His character arc has some major development of its own, and, as always, his Daddy Nyktos/Dotting Husband vibes are an absolute treat.

I think it would have been refreshing and more engaging to have multiple POVs in this book. I’m getting fed up with Sera’s repetitive inner thoughts, and I would have loved to know more about what Ash thought and went through, even a few Kolis’ chapters would have been a nice and intriguing change. After a startling betrayal ends with both Sera and the dangerously seductive ruler of the Shadowlands she has fallen madly in love with being held captive by the false King of the Gods, there is only one thing that can free Nyktos and prevent the forces of the Shadowlands from invading Dalos and igniting a War of Primals.

there's something so beautiful about the way Jennifer writes fr, she just makes you feel so much with her words, her characters are literally the best, ilove all of them

Table of Contents

If you made it this far then thanks for reading and I missed a bunch of stuff concerning this book. There is just a lot of information that is best read through the book itself.

Yeah - Sotoria's name is basically Poppy, and we now know that Poppy is most definitely Sotoria reincarnated or rebirthed. There were other reasons why this theory pans out and it has to do with the star that they have been looking for and we know Isbeth has in possession. despite my exams, i somehow finished this entire - and not especially short - book in a day, and i don't regret it at all. this was a beautiful continuation of the series that reminded me why JLA got me into reading when i was young, and while we didn't get as much ash/nyktos content as in previous two books (massive sad face) or really any baby drakon content (even bigger sad face), i still loved watching sera's growth throughout this story, and watching her immense strength shine through. We already had an idea that Sera would be spending too much time with Kolis and his fanatics, so I was prepared for their separation but what I was not prepared for was the desperation of her. Her main concern throughout her captivity was how Ash was doing, if he was safe, if he was being harmed, how she could save him. Making bargains with Kolis for his safety and we know damn well if Ash knew about it then he would never allow it.

When I say that Sera and Nyktos are my faves I mean that with everything in me. I love these characters and the world so so much. Sera is my favorite female character, I love that this book focused on her and how she used what she had access to, to get answers and figure shit out. I know that some people may be annoyed with the amount of Nyktos that we got but I loved it. I felt his absence at times but there were also reminders that this story at its core is a love story and that doesn’t change when the characters aren’t physically together. Kolis believes that Sera is Sotoria, his long-lost love that was for all account one sided. We see an entirely new side of Kolis we KNEW existed because despite his madness, you feel bad for him in certain moments. He truly loved her, but he was also madly obsessed with her, and this blurred the lines. I truly think he just lost his damn mind a long time ago and maybe once upon a time he was good? I also see a lot of similarities with Malec in regard to how he has been described. I think there is a obvious balance between twins.... there has to be good and bad to balance it all: one of my most hated tropes in fantasy book is when the main characters separated for most of the book and A Flesh in the Fire had exactly that: for 65% of the book Sera and Nyktos were kept in captivity and their only scenes together where when they slept walk, while those scenes were good, it wasn’t nearly enough! A Light in the Flame it’s just an info dump to support a new idea for Blood & Ash. If you enjoy that series, you’ll need to read this one before, I don’t see a way around it. Sera is also assaulted by him; he drinks from her and gets off on it and also physically assaults her in a few occasions because he cannot control his anger.
