Granted, these days, your average Debenhams or House of Fraser is about as enticing as another round of turkey sandwiches. After all, it's a suburb of London now, East Croydon station being a mere fifteen minutes from Victoria. It was quite a moody place with lots of early 'hoodies' in there - but it was fairly trouble free because they didn't have gambling / fruit machines in there. Other sales techniques included "tally-ho bargains", "mystery tables", "streets of adventure" and "clock days". It used to sell toys - we used to have a laugh "demonstrating" radio-controlled cars by aiming them at old biddies.

The photograph was taken in the early 1960's, by which time the Croydonisation of Croydon had just started. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. Bloody hell, Paul - we must have been rubbing shoulders - or at least waiting for each other to finish on Tron :D Mr. They provide expert and detailed descriptions, disclose all significant defects and/or restorations, provide clear and accurate pricing, and operate with fairness and honesty during the purchase experience. It is important that we continue to promote these adverts as our local businesses need as much support as possible during these challenging times. But the really incredible thing about Kennards were the amazing stunts, animal acts and performances that were put on to entice the crowds. It was quite crowded up there as the balcony was not that wide, which put you quite close to the animals, although I never heard of anybody getting bitten.

All this has been a passing of time for me, a life-time with Kennards from a child, to teenager, to adult and now senior citizen. The success of the ponies led Kennards to embark on probably their most ambitious promotion with the establishment of a small zoo. The bloke who worked in Peanuts in the mid 80s accused a friend of mine of stealing sunglasses from there and used it as an excuse to touch his bottom, filthy nonce, we were only 10 at the time. Housed next to the pony stables, in a small yard off Drummond Road, the zoo originally housed some monkeys, a camel, a peacock, some birds and other small animals. In the mid-1930s a cheetah was on display in the restaurant where it, together with no doubt some slightly nervous diners, were serenaded by Ida Santerelli and her female band. There were tally-ho bargains, mystery tables, streets of adventure, clock days, a real zoo, and Shetland pony rides to name but a few.

Also on that day, a second American attempt at a nuclear explosion in outer space ended in failure, two weeks after the first try.You might be interested to know just before xmas they along with the main company Pinnacle Records all based in Orpington went into administration. And, yes, the famous Kennards Arcade which ran from the North End down to Drummond Road sold a wide variety of exotic things, including animals and donkey rides were a highlight. Not a regular as such, but would always pop in there when out either during the day or of an evening.
