You are a great teacher. This is going to help a great deal. Getting the hang of it? Try starting from the top and slowly play the first 4 lines of the song together. Now Repeat The poem, which is called ‘The Star’, is in couplet form so lends itself well to a simple children’s song. It was first published in 1806 in Rhymes for the Nursery, a collection by Jane Taylor and her sister Ann. Learning how to play Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star on the piano is a good place to start. It’s a melody you already know by heart. You can even tell your friends you’ve learned a variation of Mozart. Playing the piece with both hands together can be attempted once each separate hand can be played with ease. With a bit of practise the child will soon memorise the tune and want to play it over and over. This is excellent for developing a wide range of skills: memory, patterns and sequences, aural recognition of intervals and finger strengthening – to name but a few! Jason F. While learning how to play Twinkle, Twinkle you will need to know this basic scale on your piano: C, D, E, F, G, A, B. This is song that I found over at Clubhouse Kids on Teachers Pay Teachers. I’ve modified it slightly to fit a simpler rhythm, but the overall words are the same. Sing the song together while clapping the rhythm at the same time. Take a fairly slow tempo. Explain that this song has 4 beats in a bar and count 4 beats in before you start each time. Each device can become part of a single large decoration, thanks to the Grouping feature, which will make them work in sync with each other.

Classical music composers of the 19th century continued what Mozart had started: using the children’s song in their compositions. For example, the composer-organist, Camille Saint-Saëns, used the melody as part of the larger work, The Carnival of the Animals, and Adolphe Adam, included it in his opéra-comique, Le toréador. However, it is a really good challenge to set yourself as a player to be able to play pieces in different keys.

English poets, Jane and Ann Taylor, were sisters who wrote children’s poems. Their book, Rhymes for the Nursery, was published in 1806 and included a poem of Jane’s called “The Star.” It was first published with the music in 1838 and later became known as “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.” Classical composer Mozart wrote his own version of ‘Twinkle Twinkle’ when he penned ‘Twelve Variations on Ah vous dirai-je, Maman’, for solo piano. Play the tune while the child sings along. If the child can read, suggest they point to the words on the music as they sing. The simple, repetitive nature of both the words and melody makes this an easy song easy for toddlers to learn and they’ll often hum along with the tune long before they can actually manage the words. They love miming out the simple actions and for a toddler whose words are not quite ready, this is both a satisfying and reassuring means of communication.
