Description

The storage pools and volumes in the expansion enclosures are configured via the QTS operating system. in regards to spindown, afaik, if you power off the nas, this would automatically put the connected tr-004 into a spindown state if i read this correctly. this feature was mentioned on reddit if not mistaken.

I then pulled a drive from the array, and got three very loud beeps and the status light blinking red. The TR-004U does not support the following: the TS-128, TS-228, TS-131, TS-231, TS-431, TS-431U, and NAS models that cannot be updated to QTS 4.3.6 (or later).

QTS is the operating system for entry- and mid-level QNAP NAS. WIth Linux and ext4, QTS enables reliable storage for everyone with versatile value-added features and apps, such as snapshots, Plex media servers, and easy access of your personal cloud. System The TR-004 is a nifty little device that allows for users to set a RAID mode for the 4-bay device with DIP switches on the unit, or through software on their Windows or MAC machines. It claims to have a USB 3.2 gen 1 over USB C port, and is designed as a standalone DAS either for added storage to a QNAP NAS, but also as a standalone DAS for a Windows, Mac, or Linux PC.

The TR-004U can only be used as an individual storage pool or volume on the NAS. Its storage pool/volume cannot be combined into the connected NAS. NAS applications cannot be installed on the TR-004U.the tr-004 uses usb to connect to the qnap, so you need to disengage by using the eject, waiting for it to inform you it's safe, before you can shutdown the tr-004 device. The TR-004 USB 3.0 RAID expansion enclosure allows you to expand the capacity of your QNAP NAS and PC. The TR-004 can also be utilized as a DAS (Direct-attached Storage) device, allowing you to directly access its content just by connecting it via USB. The TR-004 features four 3.5-inch SATA drive bays with multiple RAID configuration options and USB 3.0 Type-C connectivity to bring you a highly reliable and secure storage capacity expansion solution. Key Features Compared with other RAID enclosures, the TR-004 provides software-controlled configurations for greater management flexibility. Users can configure RAID and monitor disk health using Storage & Snapshots Manager on a QNAP NAS, or by using the QNAP External RAID Manager utility on their computer. Second, when I perform a write operation against the drive, while I perform a read operation, the speed of the read drops to ~40MB/s while the write is around ~30-40MB/s. Seems like a pretty severe penalty that shouldn't be the case. When I'm testing over network, I'm using a 8GB and a 33GB .mkv file, copying to/from NAS to my PC's Samsung 960 EVO to make sure the drive in my PC is not skewing results.

Disk mode DIP switch to change from Hardware Control and Software Control configurations for setting RAID group. spindown is good for saving on electricity bill, and MAY prolong life. I say MAY, because if you are spinning up the drives too often, it MAY instead be negatively affecting longevity i suspect. If you won't be triggering much spin up/downs on a highly frequent basis, it may be worth doing. I had this same issue (30MB/s read and write speeds) and resolved it by uninstalling the USB drivers, rebooting my Win 10 PC, and allowing the system to reinstall the drivers. Now data transfers are around 200MB/s. I really don't think it has anything to do with supposed poor performance by the TR-004. The box works just fine, as advertised. Sometimes USB drivers need to be reinstalled and reinitialized, particularly when different devices (such as USB Headphones or a USB Mouse) are exchanged for another device (such as a mass storage device).

Note that I get read speeds ~150MB/s still under this configuration. A couple interesting tidbits. First, when I connect the unit directly to a Windows PC, I am able to write at ~100MB/s! What's very interesting is that at first, I would get slow write speeds ~40MB/s on the Windows PC. I enabled write caching in Windows for the device (I guess it defaulted off because it's external storage) and then I got the 100MB/s speeds I quoted above. It's like write cache is disabled on the NAS - however, I verified that in Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> General tab, Enable Write Cache (EXT4 delay allocation) is enabled. I've also tried with and without Control Panel -> Network & File Services -> Win/Mac/NFS -> Microsoft Networking -> Advanced Options -> Enable Asynchronous I/O enabled. I also tried disabling the "Enable Write Cache." It seems like the combination that gives the best performance for the internal RAID is for Enable Write Cache to be enabled and Enable Asynchronous I/O to be disabled (which I believe is default config out of the box). The TR-004 provides an alternative method for users to expand their NAS storage capacity. By connecting the TR-004 to their NAS and using the Storage & Snapshots Manager, users can easily configure and manage their storage expansion. The TR-004 supports a variety of QNAP NAS storage and file management functions, allowing users to build storage pools, find files with Qsirch and organize files with Qfiling. Function The TR-004 can only be used as an individual storage pool or volume on the NAS. Its storage pool/volume cannot be combined into the connected NAS. NAS applications cannot be installed on the TR-004. Reformatted using the Software RAID 5 this time. Same slow issues. Then I switched to the 1m USB 3.0 C to A cable that came with the tr-004 and the "Type" shows up as "USB 3.1 Gen1". Now I get about 275 MB/s sustained writes, and still at 800 MB/s sustained reads utilizing SMB. Slows down to about 260 MB/s writes and 570 MB/s reads via AFP. All of that is with Jumbo Frames (9000). When I was on the phone with QNAP, the tech had me try Standard (1500). With that setting the Writes are the same, but the Reads slow to 415 MB/s over SMB. Reads increased to 650 MB/s over AFP with Standard (1500).
