Description

The book invites readers to engage deeply with how they might honestly ‘live the theory’ of the person-centred approach.

Tony Merry died in 2004, and this third edition has been updated, with a new chapter on recent developments, by Sheila Haugh, a long-time colleague who knew him and his work well. Clearly, I believe in Carl Rogers' theories, otherwise I wouldn't have spent the past four years training in his style of counselling, but he was ultimately a scientist and some of his theory does get a tad complicated for my non-scientific brain. He was author of several books and articles on counselling, including Learning and Being in Person-Centred Counselling — see below. I anticipate that trainees will especially welcome the additions to the Merry book about placements (chapter six, 'Training Issues: Client work and personal development') and Supervision (chapter seven). To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Excellant book for anyone, at any level of understanding, to develop a sound understanding of person centred history, theory and practice. Merry grounds person-centred counselling in its ontological foundations and shows how theory informs our practice and how the counsellor’s attitudes are essential to their practice.

Learning and Being offers an in-depth exploration of all aspects of person-centred counselling, from its origins to current developments in theory and practice. The book Learning and Being in Person-Centred Counselling by Tony Merry has inspired and guided thousands of counselling students since it was first published in 1999. In 2020 the third edition was updated by Sheila including a new chapter on recent developments in Person-Centred counselling. I feel sure that trainees will also find the 'Resources' chapter in Merry helpful too - it leaves them with somewhere to go. In the second edition of this hugely popular book, Tony Merry reorganised and updated the text to include the latest initiatives in the world of counselling and psychotherapy. He (with Sheila Haugh’s sympathetic updating) makes reference to the many theorists and practitioners who have influenced the approach, giving the reader an insight into the strands that make up the tapestry of person-centred therapy. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. Students who want to understand how to practise person-centred counselling will find useful suggestions and insight into how to accompany a client on their individual journey.

Despite being first published more than 20 years ago, this book remains relevant to contemporary person-centred counselling practice. I also valued the inclusion of the nineteen propositions in the Merry book, and the translations into more approachable language will, I think, be welcomed by trainees .
