They go to the top of Rat's old conveyor belt home and release fistfuls of money, letting five and half million dollars blow over Behala. I know and love the George Orwells of the world, who do have major social purposes, and hope to confront, educate and change. Rat, Gardo, Raphael, and Pia stuff four backpacks with money and they unfurl the rest into the growing typhoon wind, which whips up the money and spreads it far and wide across the dump. The story is amazing but the whole context of the book is done brilliantly giving you a panorama of what life is like there.

After the exchange, Marco tries to grab Gardo and he yells for backup, but Gardo gets away by slashing Marco’s eye with his hook. With these, I’ll tell you in three parts the reasons why I like this book : the setting, the characters, the plot. I love how Andy Mulligan described these dumpsite boys — not pathetic or overrated, simply that they are your ordinary dumpsite boys who rummage through the garbage and among the stupp to look for something of value to keep or to sell.

They change into school uniforms Rat finds at the Mission School, stuffing new backpacks with money.

Trash is the story of Raphael, Gardo, and Jun-jun alias Rat: three dumpsite boys who find – well, maybe not exactly treasure – in trash, but something life-altering, at the very least. Now he and his two friends, Gardo and Rat, are wanted by the corrupt forces that run the city and will stop at nothing to get back what they've lost. Raphael Fernandez lives in a slum and his only income comes from the trash where he might find something valuable (mostly not) or just pile the plastic and get paid (not a lot). Bu hakikat, edebi bir mübalağa değil kesinlikle; Raphael’i, Gardo’yu ve Jun-Jun’u, biraz dikkatli bakan herkes görebilir mahallesinde, semtinde. They escape through a hatch they've cut in the roof and run over rooftops, jumping into the window of an abandoned building full of street kids.José Angelico also had a young daughter and no other living family, which is why he was writing to Gabriel Olondriz. Olivia, the 22-year-old volunteer at the Mission School, narrates the next part: Rat comes to her explaining that Gardo needs to see his grandfather in Colva Prison. Inside is a letter written by a man named José Angelico to another man, Gabriel Olondriz, who is a prisoner in Colva Prison.

They contemplate breaking open José's wife's, son's, or daughter's graves, unsure whether he would hide money with a body. The author states in the acknowledgements that the Behala dumpsite is based on a place he visited while in Manila. At Mulligan’s request, director Stephen Daldry cast three unknowns from a local favela in the lead roles of Raphael, Gardo, and Rat. He is tortured at the police station, then released after convincing the police that he does not know anything about the bag. Rat receives his nickname because of the rats he lives among and because of his resemblance to the creatures.

Her şeyden önce, müthiş kurgusuna, çarpıcı gerçekçiliğine ve karakterlerinin derinliğine yapılacak bir haksızlık.
