Severin Films (Blu-ray) (US R0 HD), Norsk Filmstudio (DVD) (Norway R2 PAL) / WS (2.35:1) (16:9) TILBURY

Cast: Petar Bozovic, Mirjana Nikolic, Slobodan 'Cica' Perovic, Vladimír Smeral, Elo Romancik, Sona Valentoví¡, Leonid Kuralev, Natalya Varley Historians and Composers—including Marc Wilkinson, John Cameron, Jim Williams, Pentagram Home Video and more—weigh in on the sounds of folk horror from trad to electronica. A complex yet rewarding film, Penda's Fen is whip smart and quiet engaging. Anyone who has ever questioned societal mores or the religious doctrine of their homeland will see in Stephen's character a kindred spirit. Clarke and his crew do a great job of making him feel like a very real person, with Rudkin's script adding lots of depth to keep all of this interesting. The pacing isn't rapid fire but Clarke, skilled director that he was, keeps control and delivers enough bits and pieces in even the film's calmer moments to make the more intense bits hit harder. A fascinating feminist experimental film shot on location in Vermont about a group of witches performing white magic. Courtesy of the Vermont Archive Movie Project (VAMP). vamp.vtiff.org

The priest of said church (Christopher Eccleston, probably best known for his short stint on Doctor Who), doesn't do a particularly good job of hiding his attraction to Christine and he takes it upon himself to suggest that Christine become an Anchoress. The idea here is that Christine would dedicate her life to the church and be literally walled inside a room in the church where she'd have the responsibility of blessing the different members of the congregation through a single window, her only outlet to the world outside. When Christine agrees to this, the priest soon accuses her mother Pauline (Toyay Willcox) of being a witch, causing Christine to break her vows to try and sort things out. Audio Commentary With William Fowler And Vic Pratt, Curators And Authors Of “The Bodies Beneath: The Flipside of British Film & Television” Disc two also includes a few interesting short films, the first of which is an American film from 1972 titled The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow. Directed by Sam Weiss, this thirteen minute full color animated movie is narrated by none other than John Carradine and it adapts Washington Irving's classic tale of the headless horseman. This is presented newly scanned from 16mm elements for this release by the educational film archive AV Geeks, and it's a nice addition to the disc, it's pretty fun. ANCHORESS director Chris Newby documents the location of the real Christine Carpenter’s anchoress cell at St. James’ Church in Shere, England.

Also included on the third disc are some bonus short films, all presented 'newly remastered in HD from archival film elements at Public Service Media Radio Television of Serbia.' The first of these is the forty-five minute Štićenik, which was directed by Djordje Kadijevic in 1973. This made-for-TV film shares the Icelandic lore of the Tilbury, a creature who could be summoned by women in times of financial hardship and starvation. But the gifts of the Tilbury come with their own brand of destruction. Set in 1940, during the British occupation, a country boy discovers his childhood sweetheart is having an affair with a British soldier, but suspects it could be one of the evil creatures. In 1950s Australia, after 9-year-old Celia hears the disturbing fairy tale of "The Hobyahs" in school, it colors her interpretation of real life conflicts such as her parents' struggling relationship, the threat of communism and the country's plague of rabbits. Ann Turner's award-winning film paints a disquieting picture of innocence trying to make sense of the harsh and complex world around her through escape into dark fantasy. Severin Films (Blu-ray) (US R0 HD), Second Run (Blu-ray & DVD) (UK R0 PAL) / WS (1.85:1) (16:9), Scorpion Releasing (DVD) (US R0 NTSC), Umbrella (Australia R0 PAL), Jam (Germany R2 PAL) / WS (1.75:1) (16:9) ALISON'S BIRTHDAYA sixteen minute featurette called The Landscape of Feelings: The Road To Penda's Fen serves as a look at the making of the movie and is made up of interviews with the film's writer David Rudkin and producer David Rose as well as insight from some of Alan Clarke's collaborators like writer David Yallop, actor Sean Chapman and playwright David Leland. Lots of insight here into Clarke's relationship with the BBC and the freedom that they allowed him when working with him, how some of the more questionable elements in some of his productions were let out by the BBC for different reasons, the working class perspective that the film is presented with, what Clarke was like to work with, some of the themes that the picture explores and some of the traditions that the feature works into its narrative. Starring Krzysztof Jasinski, Iwona Bielska, Stanislaw Brejdygant, Olgierd Lukaszewicz, Henryk Machalica
