Description

Optical construction is 11 elements in 8 groups, including 1 ED (Extra Low Dispersion) and 4 HR (High Refractive Index). The diaphragm comprises 9 blades and produces a circular aperture, to improve the bokeh. Samyang also claims that the absence of aspheric elements in the design means that there is no distortion to the bokeh, resulting in perfectly rounded, out-of-focus highlights. This well-balanced and clearly well-made lens weighs in at a very reasonable 509g. Measuring 83.4mm in diameter and 99.5mm long, it is also fairly compact and certainly suits the camera body in terms of handling. There is a provided round, bayonet-fit lens hood that clips cleanly into place and shows no sign of easily being shifted in use. Within the bayonet mount for the hood is a standard 72mm filter thread. Thanks to various seals within the lens body, its weather sealing offers protection against light rain, snow and dust. It is commendable that Samyang at least offers some degree of explanation of the term “weather sealing”, something which is not always the case.

We’ll work through the chart results by first looking at distortion and vignette. As of yet there isn’t a correction profile available in Lightroom, but you can use the first generation profile without issue since the two lenses are essentially optically identical (with one caveat that I’ll discuss in a moment!)Optical construction is 11 elements in 8 groups, including 4 HR (High Refractive Index) and 1 ED (Extra Low Dispersion) elements. UMC coating is Samyang's own version of Ultra Multicoating. There are 9 blades in the diaphragm, to assist in producing smooth bokeh; the quality and gradation of the out of focus areas in an image. I would like to see Samyang continue to refine the autofocus through firmware update (and I believe they will), but for the primary task of shooting portraits, this lens already does great. Eye AF works very well, and, while I don’t believe the autofocus to be fast enough for sports action, it is fast and quiet enough for event work, portraiture, and the kinds of general purpose shooting it was designed for. All in all, I think the AF85 does what it needs to, and I look forward to shooting with it more in the future. Sony shooters now have a reasonable F1.4 alternative to the excellent Sony FE 85mm F1.8 lens! Slowly turn the zoom ring to the left (towards the wide-angle end) while using your upper body and arms to move the camera toward your subject.

The scale on the left side is an indication of actual image resolution. The taller the column, the better the lens performance. Simple. The Samyang shows no distortion. Illumination is fairly even from corner to corner at f/2 and narrower apertures. But at f/1.4 there is a some noticeable dimming at the edges (-1EV) and at the corners (-1.5EV). It's not dramatic and can be compensated for easily using software tools. For still images, keeping a distance equal to the diagonal length of the full image surface is recommended. The full frame sensor of a digital camera is 36 x 24mm and the diagonal length is 43.26mm so any distance close to this number is nearer to the ideal than the currently accepted industry standard of 50mm. Tip. If the moving distance is long, the camera may shake, so please shoot at a focal length between 35 and 100mm. The Samyang AF 85mm f/1.4 FE has a very wide focus ring given the overall size of the lens. There are no hard stops at the ends of the range, making it more difficult to set focus at infinity. Polariser users should be pleased that the 77mm filter thread doesn't rotate on focus.

But there is a dark cast at the edges in uncorrected Raw images—you might like the effect for portraits, and if you don't, it's easy enough to ameliorate in Lightroom or Capture One. For F1.4 Fans on a Budget Focusing is usefully internal and manual focusing is possible when the MF mode is set on the Sony camera body. Full-time manual focus override is also available if you choose the DMF focusing mode instead. There's no distance and/or depth of field scale available on this lens.

Le Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN Art est le plus petit de tous et le second plus léger après le Samyang, il est 10% plus court que le Sony FE85mm F1.4 GM et 25% plus léger The AF 85mm F1.4 FE is inspired by the optical vision of the MF 85mm F1.4 AS IF UMC, which has been loved for its beautiful out-of-focus images since its launch in 2008: however, this new lens develops the original’s existing strengths with a much more advanced optical design, newly optimized for mirrorless cameras. This lens of great value and charm with high resolution encapsulates Samyang’s universally respected 40-year optical technology in your photographs. The blue column represents readings from the centre of the picture frame at the various apertures and the green is from the edges. Averaging them out gives the red weighted column. The 85mm f/1.4 lens is a classic focal length, long considered the ideal for portraiture, along with landscapes, close up sports and low light photography. Lenses slightly longer than the standard for a format have also traditionally been the pinnacle of optical quality within a range. Samyang have been building an enviable reputation for quality lenses, first in manual focus, more recently moving successfully into AF and now also encompassing the full frame mirrorless Sony cameras. Let's have a closer look, using the 24MP Sony Alpha A7 III body. Its complex optical construction is comprised of 11 glass elements, among which are special High Refractive (HR) glass, which successfully allow both a compact size and high image resolution. The achromatic design, incorporating Extra Low Dispersion (ED) glass, effectively corrects chromatic aberrations and minimizes peripheral softness, creating lively images in vivid colors.A flimsy shallow circular plastic hood comes supplied with the lens. It fits loosely on a bayonet fitting and has a habit of detaching itself, so may be more trouble than it's worth. Flare isn't much of an issue, but contrast does take a hammering when shooting into the light, which may be a good thing if shooting portraits. La qualité de construction du Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN Art fait jeu égal avec le Sony FE85mm F1.4 GM et est au dessus des Samyang et Sony FE85mm F1.8 Apochromatic lenses have special lens elements (aspheric, extra-low dispersion etc) to minimize the problem, hence they usually cost more.

I will note that I’ve used the AF85 for a few of my YouTube segments and it did a much better job than the AF 35mm in not pulsing in and out of focus, however. I just selected a zone, and when I was in that zone the autofocus was actually quite stable (basically flawless after the Firmware 3.0 update for the a7R3). Resistance to flare is good but not more than that, you can easily get some flare when facing the sun There is no hyperfocal distance scale, or hard infinity stop, which is unusual for a lens like this, which uses no low dispersion glass in its optical design. Four HR (High Refractive) elements, made of special materials with an outstanding refractive index, improve optical performance and enable a compact optical design. The AF 85mm F1.4 FE was designed from the ground-up with this technology, to lessen its users’ burden with a shorter length and smaller size. Samyang AF 85II Build, Design and Handling

Le Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN Art et le Sony GM sont les meilleurs en terme de bokeh et de flou d’arrière plan A little pincushion distortion is revealed by our lab tests but it’s generally quite hard to spot in real-world shots. Samyang AF 85mm f/1.4: Verdict We don't list every single Samyang lens in this guide, just those we've tested that are especially interesting to photographers I want to thank Samyang for sending me a test retail copy of the lens for review. As always, this is a completely independent review. The opinions here are completely my own. *The tests and most of the photos that I share as a part of my review cycle have been done with the new Sony Alpha 1 which will serve as my benchmark camera for the foreseeable future ( my review here) and the Sony a7IV Samyang AF 85II Build, Design and Handling
