Description

Cued Articulation describes how to cue consonant sounds while Cued Vowels describes the 23 standard English vowel sounds. Using interactive consonant, vowel and diphthong tables, the app displays video cues of each sound, as well as an animated illustration of the mouth and throat while producing the sounds.

Originally devised to help severely speech and language handicapped children to see a sound and hear a letter by the use of easy and logical hand cues, the Cued Articulation system has, over the last three decades, proved an invaluable teaching tool. For us it is essential to explore phonics through listening and visual support, this ensures that the children understand that each letter has a name and a sound, and that we can listen for the sounds in words. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. In their daily Phonics lessons, they learn to link a sound (phoneme) with its written letter (grapheme). Supporting understanding of phonics in this was allows children to begin to blend and segment for reading and writing.

I know one school that have adopted Cued Articulation instead of the jolly phonics actions as they find it so useful. When children are first attempting to sound out and blend words or trying to listen for the sounds in words, Cued Articulation can help. The book can be used with the interactive Cued Articulation DVD (interactive whiteboard compatible), which supports the program through demonstration of the cues and sounds. There were no significant differences between groups on measures relating to phonics knowledge and attitudes towards learning.

It is a helpful tool to promote reading fluency, particularly in blending and segmenting multi-syllable words. This thesis considers the impact of Cued Articulation, a multisensory phonics teaching tool, on children’s phonics knowledge, word-reading ability and attitudes towards learning. The previously separate titles Cued Articulation and Cued Vowels are now combined and updated, with this edition covering consonants, vowels, demonstrative images and full colour coding throughout. I also find that it is an easy way to encourage the child to look at your face without directly asking them. Both ‘p’ and ‘b’ are made in the same way using the lips, the only difference between them is the voicing. They are all voiced and are graded by whether they are made towards the front or back of the mouth and how open or closed the mouth is. Cued Articulation and Cued Vowels are two companion texts written by Jane Passy to help teach the pronunciation of spoken English.

Below is a list of the cued articulation actions which accompany the letters of the alphabet they will be taught. It helps learners to discriminate between, and use, sounds which do not occur in their 1st languages. The afternoon part of the training focuses on the Cued Articulation Approach which can be used within settings and classrooms to support children presenting with speech sound difficulties. Teachers found that using the cues not only helped the children with difficulties, but it also raised the sound awareness skills of everyone in the class. To use CA in its most simple form, the practitioner only needs knowledge of the system, 12 coloured pencils and enthusiasm. Some children also need to place their other hand on their throat so that they feel the difference in their voice boxes too. They are easy to learn and help children with auditory processing difficulties to "see" the difference between similarly sounding, paired voiced and unvoiced letter sounds e.

I use it most for word final sound discrimination; you let the child try on their own, but if they can’t quite hear the sound I model the word again but sign the final sound.

Cued Articulation’s particular benefit for ESOL and EAL is that it is both a visual and cognitive approach to tackling pronunciation difficulties. The hand movements are logical – each hand movement represents one sound and the cue gives clues as to how and where the sound is produced. Children often miss out some of the consonants in the middle of longer words, so you can sign the ones they miss out. It is recommended that users have the underlying knowledge of sounds and the sound system of English.
