Description

A hugely affecting picture book about not judging people by appearances and a rare children’s book that tackles the experience of being a child with a parent in prison, Matt de la Peña and Christian Robinson’s beautiful story is both wise and accessible.

I also loved that the child was able to reflect on the assumption they made in their art thoughts and be open to alternative narratives because it’s important for kids to be flexible to changing their minds and knowing that sometimes we are not always right. We use Google Analytics to see what pages are most visited, and where in the world visitors are visiting from. There's the wedding-dressed woman with a little dog peeking out of her handbag; Milo imagines her in a grand cathedral ceremony.

We don't KNOW why his Mum is in jail, she's smiling and he's happy to see her, and it's going to cause ANY child to question their flummoxed parents. Matt De La Peña’s creative story with its wit and glorious, descriptive text is intricately realised through Christian Robinson’s rich pictures.

We are experiencing delays with deliveries to many countries, but in most cases local services have now resumed. These cookies help provide information on metrics the number of visitors, bounce rate, traffic source, etc. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. Tip to parents: if you aren't prepared to talk to your child about jail and visiting family there, this may not suit your picture book needs. But when the boy in the suit gets off on the same stop as Milo—walking the same path, going to the exact same place—Milo realizes that you can’t really know anyone just by looking at them.

With the same combination of wide-eyed observation and suspenseful buildup to a socially conscious revelation that readers cherished in this duo's award-winning Last Stop on Market Street (2015), this picture book offers a child's view of the impacts of incarceration on families. But this is building up to an ending that most families will find a little problematic to explain when not prepared. It is accepted by you that Daunt Books has no control over additional charges in relation to customs clearance. This author and illustrator are my favorite dynamic duo and I continue to look forward to their work. Serious issues are explored with sensitivity and humour, creating a funny, moving and uplifting tale.Manages to be sophisticated while also bringing in the joy and wonder associated with picture books.

It's actually rather lovely though, with Milo and his sister on a journey to see their mum, which will raise questions with children: where is she if she isn't with them? He watches the passengers and sees one ‘trawling through brown mounds of slush‘ to a ‘ cluttered apartment‘ with ‘ mewling cats’. A little boy's train journey through a bustling city reveals that we are all more alike than we are different. And it is the masterful way Matt and Christian have intertwined this emotional journey with the train ride that makes this picture book timeless.

Together Matt and Christian have created an authentic atmosphere of what it’s like to travel on a busy city train, making it relatable for all children. His third novel, We Were Here, was an ALA-YALSA Best Book for Young Readers, an ALA-YALSA Quick Pick for Reluctant Readers, and a Junior Library Guild Selection. There is an another, imagined world, an absence between siblings and then the weight of the journey end. The team behind the Newbery Medal winner and Caldecott Honor book Last Stop on Market Street and the award-winning New York Times bestseller Carmela Full of Wishes once again delivers a poignant and timely children’s book that’s sure to become an instant classic.
