This isn’t a knock on the game whatsoever but having someone with at least a passing knowledge of how to play will go a long way toward everyone at the table having a blast. I’ve only played one chapter, but it was a very amusing evening’s entertainment which, at one stage, saw our two characters desperately trying to open a tomb door while zombies burst up from their graves and swarmed us.

You have a character sheet (or several) with a range of stats that change as you adventure and also contribute to your dice rolls. It’s easy to get side tracked in celebrating a hard fought battle and short change yourselves on loot and lore. Gamers like that happen to be few and far between, however, so this title is going to be right up a lot of people’s alleys. GBG should have cards that players can put in their tableau to show that they have these cool items and to serve as a reminder that they are there to be used (and to remind players that they take up space in their inventory). The art of Stephen Gibson is truly stellar (he is up there with the likes of some of the best artists in board games people!

I can’t say this is a cardinal sin or anything because I’m a guy who wishes that Final Fantasy went back to using the ATB or simple turn based combat. ALL RULES, GAME GRAPHICS AND GAME IMAGES ON THIS SITE AND IN ANY FILES DOWNLOADED FROM THIS SITE ARE THE PROPERTY OF THEIR COPYRIGHT OWNERS. Before I truly dive in allow me to also recommend the person tasked with the role of narrator be someone who can get into a roleplaying spirit as Folklore contains a good bit of reading aloud. We’ve had a great time playing Folklore and I’m hoping the game catches on well enough to bring us more expansions on top of the currently available Dark Tales. With Folklore, I read through the rules and pretty much had a handle on the proceedings from the start.

Story markers can be positive or negative and mostly are gained at key points in the overarching tale. The idea of silver bullets killing a werewolf dates back a few centuries ago to southern France where a peasant farmer managed to take down a man eating wolf with one. This allows you to still be a part of the battles and can also be used as a strategic element depending on how the battle is going. You’ll increase your ability statistics, optimize your equipment, and even interject your own personality into the character, as you interact with NPCs and make decisions within the world around you. We made it to the final boss area and two of us were in the spirit world battling the shape-shifting lycan to rescue the hostage we were out to seek. In fact, I would say that with a good party of 4 characters or more, you should be able to survive, but be warned. There’s a nice tactical flavor that isn’t simply a rinse and repeat affair while also not getting bogged down in a ton of minutia.

There are fans who have moved the whole system to D20, which probably would work better if D100 gets you down. For those of you who have enjoyed The Witcher books and video games, Folklore is channeling that type of world.Where Folklore deviates is in its execution, as it is completely cooperative – no Game Master required. Silly subtitles aside, Folklore: The Affliction, takes direct inspiration from Gothic European folklore and mythology. Beneath the buildings, stone and wood edifices, you notice the layers of dust and grime, and a deepening of the shadows.
