But that lack of experience, Carlisle implies, has made philosophy as dry-balled and fruitless as Rev Casaubon.

Maybe I will need to read this author’s next book to resolve some of my questions in which case the ending is rather clever! The DCI – “a dumpy wee woman with bad hair and terrible dress sense” who can pull out “the kind of smile that makes small children whimper and cling to their mother’s legs” – is as intuitive, courageous and grumpy as ever, and McDermid’s plotting is top-notch. And two or three versions are on that Japanese Bob live album, including the best version of “Things Have Changed. The premise was great and I was excited to read it, but halfway through I still wasn't sure how Isobel and Gabriela's stories would link up and there are so many unanswered questions still at the end. I've since read that it's the second of a trilogy, which explains a but but I won't be rushing to read any more. This is not an espionage novel at all but is being sold as one, it is more like domestic noir - a genre that tends to bore me.

Double Life of Bob Dylan: A Restless, Hungry Feeling The Double Life of Bob Dylan: A Restless, Hungry Feeling

Pirie, who is still coming to terms with the death of her lover – walking the streets of Edinburgh by night, easing the pain with a variety of artisan gins – finds herself in the middle of two very different cases. But she is also the daughter of Lord Colin Spenser, who vanished 26 years earlier after becoming the prime suspect in a brutal attack on Claire’s mother and nanny.Only in 1980 was a memorial plaque for Eliot installed at Westminster Abbey between WH Auden and Dylan Thomas. I did really enjoy this book but found the ending somewhat unsatisfying so I have only given it 4 stars! I'm talking, some anti-fun editor surely made a deliberate point of removing anything approaching exciting twists, engaging writing or character development. He started doing those “Hallelujah, I’m Ready to Go” opening country-style Stanley Brothers religious songs.

A Double Life by Charlotte Philby | Goodreads

I came into this review blind as I was unaware of the authors connections - this said I really enjoyed the almost espionage theme running through this. The second case sees Pirie dragged into the circle of a cold-eyed killer after overhearing a conversation between two women. When I was there for four weeks, it was tough because outside of the Arts District, it is a small town. And judging by comments on the third book, it seems she didn't know how to end that one either, so I think I'll quit now!Full of twists and turns, Charlotte Philby expertly interweaves Gabriela and Isobel’s stories, and although separate, as the pages turn the reader begins to notice similarities, cross overs. Working on a local paper in Camden Isobel is a journalist who feels responsible for the death of her friend Jess in a road accident. On her wedding night, awaiting Grandcourt’s arrival in the bedroom, she sees herself repeated ad infinitum in glass panels, becoming part of, as Carlisle puts it, “a long procession of virgin brides who have gone before and will follow after across the marital threshold”. Well, the people that he’s interviewing, most of those people, their memories are already extremely dubious. For all Heylin’s flaws – the clunkiness, the pettiness, the self-indulgence, the needless score-settling – Far Away From Myself is not just another Bob Dylan book.

She felt that her position had been side-lined and that all her hard work had suddenly been over-looked.

I found the ending disappointing, it seemed to end abruptly and there were still lots of things left unanswered. Even her children are not as important as what she wants and the life she perceives she should lead. Gabriella is keen to advance her career and her language skills have her slated to be sent to Moscow at some point. It takes in everything from Blood on the Tracks and Oh Mercy to sex (there’s such a lot of sex), Christianity, Dylan’s drink-fuelled commercial decline, and the ongoing rebirth once he embraced sobriety in 1994 – all with a forensic eye.
