In this writeup - and video review - we’ll give an overview of the features, how it's changed over the MAHLE X35, and whether the changes amount to a better electric bike. Delivery timescales are esimates in working days; Public Holidays, Saturday's and Sunday's are NOT classed as working days. When attached to any Ribble e-bike the MAHLE range extender supplements the main battery, boosting the total battery capacity to a whopping 456Wh. This equates to an extra 70% of range, allowing you to extend your rides for longer and travel further in search of adventure. The extender works in two ways. Firstly, when connected to the e-bike system the first two amps of power are provided by the range extender. Meaning the main battery is discharged much more slowly. It also acts like a power bank and will actually charge the main battery when demand is at its lowest; while descending or above the 25km threshold when all assistance ceases. Speaking of assist, MAHLE motors are spec’d on Class 1 e-bikes with a 20 mph max pedal assist. You’ll feel the motor start to taper off its assist as you approach 20 mph to make the transition smooth. MAHLE Controller UpdatesIt is always a fight to make electric bikes feel natural when riding. Its even harder to do so when you’re trying to keep the system as lightweight as possible. But MAHLE really focused on improving ride feel, and they seemed to have pulled it off here. When attached to Gain, the external device charges the bike's main internal battery, which has a current capacity of 248W / h, and adds an additional 208W / h to the Ebikemotion X35 systems. This brings the total battery capacity to 450W / h, giving a 70% boost to the internal battery's charge. THe X35 Range Extender gives you another 208Wh (70%) offering nearly 2 hours of additional boost at maximum power assist — something unheard of in the industry.

The X35 Range Extender is compatible with Gain F, Gain M and Gain D models from 2018 and Gain and Vibe and Optima models from 2021. The X35 Range Extender is not compatible with the eMX24 model. When attached to Gain, the external device charges the bike's main internal battery. The internal battery on the Gain offers 248Wh so the additional 208Wh from the X35 Range Extender brings the total battery capacity to 450Wh. Charging while riding: When the consumption of the motor will be lower than 2A (downhill, no assistance or over 25km/h, all the energy doesn’t consumed by the motor will charge the main battery (by this way we compensate the extra consumption during uphill) Just a technical note: Li-Po (Li-Ion) batteries don't need to be the same type, neither the same capacity and/or age, just the same chemistry, obviously, and both close in the voltage. I have enough experience in charging Li-Po batteries in parallel (RC helicopters, 4 batteries 5S (= 21V), 4500mAh, 70C (= capable > 300A) ). It is possible to connect them in parallel safely with the auxialiary pins with resistor first (to equal the total voltage), without any other electronics (there is no short circuit in such case and max. current surge is safely limited with the resistor). When connected batteries in parallel, capacity difference is not important, neither exact internal resistance of the cells (serial cells are balanced during last period of charging, parallel cells are equall in voltage by principle, Li-Po/Li-Ion RC batteries have a service connector with each cell connected separately). That may be the reason, why the range extender and main battery are charged separately (no cell voltage service connector is available outside). The Orbea E-Bike Range Extender is compatible with Gain F, Gain M and Gain D models from 2018 and newer, and Optima E models from 2019. It mounts on the saddle tube and diagonal tube, respectively. The external charger is NOT compatible with the eMX24 model. You should always keep proof of postage and we advise you to use a ‘signed for service’ when returning goods. When attached to Gain, the external device charges the bike's main internal battery, which hascurrent capacity of 248W / h, and adds an additional 208W / h to the Ebikemotion X35 systems. This brings the total battery capacity to 450W / h, giving a 70% boost to the internal battery's charge. Enhance your ride and go farther with the new external charger for Gain. The X35 Range Extender makes bigger challenges and longer adventures possible, providing nearly 2 hours of additional boost at maximum power assist — something unheard of in the industry.
