This first volume of Short Stories in Spanish for Beginners would be too difficult for an absolute beginner. My Spanish level was already intermediate back then, and it has even improved since, so I can't fathom why I set it aside in the first place. From memory, some of the stories were about AI, a traveling band, space exploration, and a boat trip. However for familiarising yourself with these factors and using alongside your learning I think it is worthy of having in your library. An unmissable collection of eight unconventional and captivating short stories for young adult and adult intermediate learners of Spanish.However, it didn’t include audio chapter summaries and comprehension questions as Richards has included in other language versions of this book (requiring learners to refer to the included PDF for those features). Often the host there would use words I was seeing in the book, and I like getting the pronunciation reinforced that way. But there are aspects about this book that don’t make it suitable for a beginner as it throws in present tense, past and future tenses whilst using conjugated verbs all without explanation.
