Anyway, reading between the lines, you might get the feeling I’m not particularly enamoured by Auchentoshan. And you would be right. This is a distillery that hasn’t yet won me over. The triple distillation is interesting, but I struggle to find other hooks. And yet, it’s a hugely successful brand that’s in the Top 20 best-selling Scotch single malts in the world. There is an audience for their lighter, accessible style. I’m just not sure if I am part of that audience. No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service. a b c d e "Auchentoshan– Scotch Malt whisky distillery profile". MaltMadness.com. Auchentoshan 12 Years is a single malt with a pleasant amount of character. It’s a whisky that I wouldn’t say I’ve been avoiding reviewing, but I haven’t exactly gone out of my way to secure a bottle so I was incredibly happy to see it show up in the Flaviar tasting kit I was sent – which is a neat thing in and of itself. Finish: The licorice note detected on the palate carried through on the finish that I found to be of medium length and drying. It had a slightly harsh quality that detracted slightly from the experience. Each and every Member must be of legal drinking age in its country of residence to be allowed to use the Service. Auchentoshan distillery ( / ˌ ɒ x ən ˈ t ɒ ʃ ən/ OKH-ən- TOSH-ən) is a single malt whisky distillery in the west of Scotland. Nose: Poached pears and dusty spices – cinnamon (highly pronounced) and anise sit on top of a bed of wild honey and breakfast cereals. Later, unripe apples and fruit pastilles are joined by moist tobacco leaves and green grassiness. Quite fresh, quite clean and altogether rather pleasant.Balance: There is a good transition of aromas and flavours between nose, palate, and finish. I found most flavours to be consistently present, without being in competition with one another. Unusual for a Scottish distillery, Auchentoshan practices triple distillation. [10] [4] :16 The mash tun at the distillery is a modern stainless steel semi-Lauter mash tun, with a copper canopy. [4] :15 Generally the final stage of Scotch whisky production involves distilling the fermented mash in two copper stills. In Auchentoshan, a third still (known as the "Intermediate Still") helps to give a final spirit strength of 81% ABV (162 proof). [10] This triple distillation, in addition to an unpeated malt, [5] gives Auchentoshan a more delicate and sweet flavour than many Scotch whiskies. [6] Maturation is mainly in ex-bourbon barrels and ex-sherry butts, though some Auchentoshans will mature in French wine casks. [11]

Auchentoshan’s claim to fame is that they’re the one distillery in Scotland to triple distil their entire output. As a consequence, their new make spirit sits at an impressive 81%, much higher than the average Scottish distillery. It’s an interesting distinction and a unique selling point they’ve wholeheartedly embraced. The distillery happily emphasizes triple distillation is more time-consuming, more expensive, and absolutely unique. Which isn’t false. But triple distillation isn’t better (or worse). It’s just a different method. This dram makes me feel like I’m sitting in front of a warm log fire whilst outside the wind blows a gale, the rain falls and the temperature drops. The TV is on and I’m watching my favourite football team win 5.0 against their biggest rivals and their star player has just got sent off for diving in the penalty area. It doesn’t get any better. The Auchentoshan 12 Year Old replaced the distillery’s 10 Year Old expression as their entry-level single malt. Bottled at 40% abv, the whisky has a deep, off-color gold appearance. Another way to look at it would be as a bright, well-polished bronze coloring. At the same time I've been planning to send some whisky samples to my friend and fellow Connosr member, Systemdown, as he had the good idea that exchanging samples would be a good way to experience more whiskies for much cheaper.Similar to the nose the palate comes across oily and filled with notes of malt, overripe fruit, savory spice, butterscotch and brown butter along with a touch of vanilla and that same general oily earthiness. a b "Auchentoshan profile". I have shared this bottle with other novice and experienced whisky drinkers and all have enjoyed it. This dram was tasted in a copita glass, without hand warming or water added. Now on to the notes…

Auchentoshan 12 year old was released in 2011 as a replacement for a previously issued 10 year old. At the time, the branding was arguably old and stuffy, and so the shakeup of the range was accompanied by a fairly radical relaunch – new glassware, new modern styling, and a change in emphasis away from highlighting the Lowlands as the region of origin, and more towards triple distillation and the brand name itself. The styling of the range has remained near identical in the 8 years since. [4] [8] The original distillery was built by a corn merchant named John Bulloch and managed with his son. [4] Following their bankruptcy in 1834, the distillery was sold to Alexander Filshie, a local farmer and it remained under control of his family until 1877, following a bad harvest when it was sold again to several owners. [4] In 1877, the distillery was acquired by the Glasgow distillers John & George MacLachlan. [4] The area around the distillery was damaged during the Second World War and a bomb crater behind the distillery now acts as a pond for cooling water. [4] The distillery was bought by Eadie Cairns in 1969, who rebuilt it completely. [8] Cairns sold Auchentoshan to whisky blenders Stanley P Morrison (later to become Morrison Bowmore distillers) in 1984. [8] [4] Suntory invested in Morrison Bowmore in 1989 and in 1994, they acquired 100% of its holdings. [4] In May 2014, [9] Beam Inc. and Suntory Holdings Limited merged to create Beam Suntory Inc, who are now the owners of Auchentoshan and other Morrison Bowmore holdings. Special bottlings are released periodically, including the oldest, a 50-year-old Auchentoshan distilled in 1957 and released in 2008. [12] Auchentoshan 12 Years is the entry malt for the Auchentoshan distillery which is one of only 3 remaining Lowlands distilleries after the whisky market crash that caused a rash of distillery closures in 1983. Like many of the now defunct Lowlands distilleries, Auchentoshan practices a triple distillation which is a fairly common practice in Ireland, but much less so in Scotland where the majority of distilleries practice a 2x distillation. If i had to choose this over the Glendronach 12, I'd take this. The Glendronach was a slight disappointment (despite the fact I gave it a higher rating.)
