Admittedly, the Stealth 700 Gen 2 Max isn’t the most elegant of headsets, and its bulky earpieces and sturdy metal and plastic headband mean that you look like a Cyberman from Dr Who. The design is very comfortable, though, and the earpieces’ memory foam padding, with a dash of cooling gel, stops you from overheating when the going gets tough. Coming in at a mid-range price, the Stealth 700 Gen 2 offers an abundance of audio capabilities and other features that will likely prove overkill for your average console player.One of the biggest differences between the Stealth 600 Gen 2 and Stealth 700 Gen 2 is having access to both the Xbox pairing protocol and Bluetooth. Both headsets have the Xbox pairing, which makes syncing your headset with an Xbox extremely convenient. You just press the pairing button on the console, then the button on the headset, and they pair.

Be careful not to trap your fingers while extending or closing the device after use; I’ve made that mistake with Turtle Beach products in the past. As for the earcups, they’re incredibly snug and comfortable – although glasses-wearers may find them a tad irritating, given how tightly the Stealth 700 Gen 2 hug the head. Weirdly, The Messenger – a platformer with music made to sound like something you’d hear on 8- and 16-bit-style consoles – presented some of the only noticeable audio hiccups. Some complex, high notes in the music would come through scratchy and muddled. The Turtle Beach Stealth 700 Gen 2 is a sold gaming headset for console gamers. Launching two separate models optimised for the two next-gen consoles – PS5 and Xbox Series X – is a nice touch, although you can arguably find better value if you’re a PC gamer.The Stealth 700 Gen 2 has a slimmer version of Turtle Beach’s usual built-in microphone. The hard plastic mic is built into the housing of the left earcup, so it sits flush when flipped up into mute position. The flip-down mic is very convenient and easy to use, but can’t really be repositioned. It has a secondary hinge letting you move slightly closer or further from your face, but it’s a far cry from the reshapable wire mics you find from many other manufacturers. The Turtle Beach Stealth 700 Gen 2 MAX frequency response follows our ideal headphone curve fairly closely. Like many gaming headsets, there’s a slight emphasis in the bass range, usually done to emphasize gunfire and other combat foley. There’s a noticeable dip from 200-600Hz, which will impact the timbre of some instruments when listening to music. Finally, there’s some slight deviation from our target curve in the high end, which is likely where the sound quality takes the biggest hit. Overall the sound is quite enjoyable and does a lot to justify the price point. Lows, mids, and highs Update 10/21/2021: We've changed Multi-Device Pairing from 'No' to 'Bluetooth + Console/Non-BT Wireless' as these headphones can connect to a PS4 or PS5 console and a Bluetooth device at the same time.
