The fact that there is nothing but flatness in the f/1.4 and f/2 images is exactly what we want! It's not until f/2.8 where the blur circles even become circles at all, and even then, they are even, without emphasized edges. Sharpness That Speaks: Regardless of whether you're using an FX or DX-format D-SLR, expect unparalleled edge-to-edge sharpness. For DX-format users, the lens provides an angle of view equivalent to 127.5mm in FX/35mm format For less money, the B+W 72mm 010 is an excellent filter, as are the multicoated version and the basic multicoated Hoya filters, but the Hoya HD3 is the toughest and the best.

You might not want this lens if you are looking for the sharpest lens from edge to edge of the image. (The lens is designed to be sharp in the center "focus" and soft in the corner). The only better lens of which I know is Canon's 85mm f/1.2 L Aspherical, which is excellent even at f/1.2, but has no hard infinity focus stop, making focus iffier for astronomy. Detailed specifications for the lens, along with MTF charts and other useful data for the Nikon NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G lens can be found in our lens database. NIKON D750 + 85mm f/1.4 @ 85mm, ISO 110, 1/200, f/2.8 Lens Handling For comparison, the AF-D lens (naked) weighs 18.490 oz. (524.1 g). This manual focus lens is about the same size, but weighs 3 oz. (85g) more than the AF version.

This is the legendary Nikkor portrait lenses. The lens comes with a screw on hood, excellent metal construction and is a solid performer. Let’s have a look at the technical data and make some comparison to similar lenses. We’ve rated the features with a [+] (or [++]), when it’s better than average or even state of the art, a [0] if it’s standard or just average, and [-] if there’s a disadvantage. It is especially well suited to the new Nikon D4 and D800, in fact, this is the lens with which the Nikon D3 is shown in many of Nikon's promotional photos. With its rounded 7-bladed diaphragm, the Nikon 85 1.8G sometimes makes broadly muted 14-pointed sunstars on bright points of light. There isn't anything else to say: it's sharp, sharp, sharp. There isn't anywhere that it's not sharp, but only if you have it in perfect focus.

The completely different autofocus 85mm f/1.4 D lens is introduced. This manual focus 85mm f/1.4 AI-s is not discontinued. Nikkor AF 85mm f/1.4D has been hailed as legendary lens for Nikon DSLR or film camera. I think it is because of its unique characteristic but also its age. This lens has been around for thirteen years. Manual focus on the Nikon D800 is also fast, easy and accurate using the electronic indicators, even at f/1.4.

This is the most precise and well-built 85mm f/1.4 lens ever made by anyone. Not even LEICA has never made an 85mm f/1.4. Because the metal hood is attached to the filter thread of the AF-D lens, the lens cap would never sit right on the front of the Nikon 85mm f/1.4D, whereas the new 85mm f/1.4G does not have this problem – the hood has been replaced with a plastic bayonet hood that does not use the filter thread, so the lens cap could be put on and taken out very easily. See Nikon Lens Compatibility for details on your camera. Read down the "AF, AF-D (screw)" column for this lens. All these lenses are superb for any sort of photography. If you split hairs and pixels, this manual focus 85mm f/1.4 AI-s easily has the best optics of the four 85mm lenses I compared directly.

It won't autofocus with the cheapest new AF 35mm cameras like the N55, but if you focus manually, everything else works great. Even if you lose autofocus, these cameras have in-finder focus confirmation dots to help you. For B&W film outdoors, I'd use a 77mm Nikon Y48 or O56 filter, or 77mm Hoya HMC K2 or 77mm Hoya HMC Orange. Rounded 9-blade diaphragm contributes to a more organic appearance of out-of-focus image components This 85/1.4 has always been a favorite of portrait professionals, along with the older 85/1.4 AI-s and newer 85/1.4 G.Nikon Super Integrated Coating is Nikon's term for its multilayer coating of the optical elements in NIKKOR lenses. I'd leave either a 77mm Nikon Clear (NC - UV) filter, or a 77mm Hoya Super HMC UV on the lens at all times. I would leave the hood at home. You can judge the effect if you look at the shadows at the lower left of the camera body and the mounting-plate. The shadows become lighter and the overall image contrast and dynamic range is reduced by almost one stop when the lens is stopped down from f1.4 to f5.6. The effect is nothing dramatic but for optimal results you should prevent the sun from shining into the lens. Gallery This 85mm f/1.4 AI-s is slightly sharper than the f/1.4 AF and f/2 AI-s version. The 85mm f/1.8 manual focus is inferior. These differences are slight, and most visible at large apertures and in the corners, where good photographers aren't worrying about sharpness. Its legendary performance made the Nikon 85mm f/1.4D lens a must-have for portrait photographers and many professionals heavily relied on this lens for many years for their commercial work (and some still do). The Nikkor 85mm f/1.4G lens is the latest update to the 85mm f/1.4 line, which replaced the outdated AF-D version with newer optical and technology innovations from Nikon. In this review, I will not only provide information on the Nikon 85mm f/1.4G lens, but will also compare it to both the older Nikon 85mm f/1.4D and the lighter and smaller Nikon 85mm f/1.8G.
